Project Summary

Security has always been a major concern for households and office environments. To address this concern, various approaches have been proposed and novel improved methods are being investigated. Now a day, the office security level has grown up, and to provide security to our offices and homes, computer vision-based solutions using face recognition and other biometrics can be implemented. Any camera capable of capturing a clear, unobstructed view of a person's face can be used for the former application and a biometric scanner can be used to scan finger impressions to identify and authenticate a visitor. In this project, we shall propose a cheap and reliable solution based on these two biometric modalities to control the locking indoors of the offices and apartments. The proposed Facial And Biometric Recognition System will recognize the visitor and will greet him/her by his/her name and the door will be unlocked. If they are not identified, the door will remain locked. The system will perform detection and recognition rapidly in real-time when the face is in front of the camera or when the thumb impression is scanned. This project is mainly for future features including safety, monitoring, security, and control to office automation.

Project Objectives

The objective of the proposed project is to improve the security measures for personal and professional use and go one step above the conventional door locking. It will not just increase the security features, it will also free the user from worrying about forgetting about the door keys. At the time of installation, the system configures its models for the given set of users, capturing their faces and fingerprints, which can be changed/updated later as required. This Facial And Biometric Recognition System can also have its application in the vault door to keep all the precious assets safe from unauthorized access.

Project Implementation Method

Our proposed system integrates both fingerprint and facial recognition systems. A real-time face as well as fingerprint recognition system that captures images from a camera or scanned fingerprint from a thumb scanner connected to the Arduino. Then it checks if this face or fingerprint exists in its dataset of faces or fingerprint images using face and fingerprint recognition technique from literature. The software part consists of facial and fingerprint recognition algorithms. The hardware part involves all hardware components like a camera, fingerprint scanner, LCD, and Arduino.

We already have explored the literature on these two topics and figure out few potential approaches that can be used in our project implementation.

Benefits of the Project

Our project, Facial And Biometric Recognition System, will propose a security system for offices and apartments. Security of human life and property is one of the paramount challenges facing individuals, corporate organizations, or any nation. The problem of insecurity of properties and intrusion into premises dates back as far as the existence of man. One major means of achieving security within a building is through the door access control. The door access control provides security by limiting unauthorized access, and the proposed Facial And Biometric Recognition System aim at providing a cheap and reliable door lock management using face and finger scan based authentication and authorization.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The implementation of our project is straightforward. Initially, the code for facial and fingerprint recognition and creating a database will be developed in c/c++ in Arduino IDE. The data needs to be saved in the database for computing and scaling purposes. After the successful completion of facial and fingerprint recognition, the program needs to be deployed in Arduino. The system will save faces and fingerprints using an Arduino camera and feature extraction will be done. Algorithms will be trained on this collected data. When a user stands in front of the system or scans the fingerprint, it will feed the facial or fingerprint image to the trained algorithms. The algorithms will give the verification of the input image i.e., whether it is present in the database or not. If the image is verified then access to the user will be granted or else, denied.
