Electrical energy generation for street light using solar and piezoelectric technique and intensity control of light
Electricity is the basic need for today’s life. Almost all of our appliances are electrically powered. Pakistan is
suffering from energy crises. Energy crises arise the problem regarding to electricity generation which effect the
human life. Energy sources are limited and energy demand has increased, so renewable energy sources are used in
order to meet the increase demand for energy. We design our project to meet the energy problem faced by Pakistan.
Electricity generation is being done through solar panels and piezo electric sources.
We are designing automatic street light power by solar panels and piezo electric sensors. Automatic street light is
important for safety of driver and pedestrians as risk of accidents reduces. Our project is also having smart on and
off system. Street lights automatically turn on and off at dusk and dawn respectively. Solar street light have several
advantages over other sources of energy. Energy from sun is renewable source of energy which is free from noise
and environmental pollution problem. Solar street lights requires much less maintenance compared to conventional
street lights. Electricity produced from solar panels is free from pollution. So, solar street light is environmental
friendly. The interfacing of solar street light with another renewable resource(piezo-electric sensors) will make
them efficient in cloudy days.
Mainly there are three main Objectives as described below :
Energized street light through solar pannel
Energy generation through piezo electric sensor
Saving the electrical energy by Controlling the intensity of street light using IR sensor.

In developing countries like Pakistan, the demand for power is increasing day by day. Due to increase in
population there is lot of power cut-offs. Power generation requires fuel to produce electricity. Fuel has harmful
effects on the environment. So we got motivated to harvest power using an alternative source of energy and also
doesn’t have any negative effect on the environment. Solar street lights are sunlight dependent. Solar panels are
not efficient during cloudy conditions. So, solar panels need to be synchronized with main power grid to consume
energy when there is no sunlight available. Dependence of solar panel on the main power grid makes it less
economical. So we are creating solar street lights fully independent of power grid by using alternative renewable
generation source.
We are designing a project that eliminates the dependence of street lights from power grid. The street lights
are powered by solar and pizo electric supply. The main issue of electricity generation in the misty weathers
through solar panel is the non-availability of adequate sun light for power generation. We introduce the method of
generation by piezo electric sensors. As the generation from solar panels is reduced when the weather is cloudy or
misty there should be an alternative way to charge the solar batteries. in previous designs, the grid was compulsorily
utilized but we have provided option to shift load from grid to piezo electric sensors. The piezo electric sensors
generate the electricity in AC form. In order to store the charge, we are using the rectification circuits that will
convert the generation of piezo electric sensors in DC. This stored energy in the DC batteries will be utilized to
energize the street lights.
In only solar/grid combination, number of batteries required is prohibitively large, making the system complex and
costly. To reduce that cost we are using auto vehicle detection technique to increase/decrease the intensity of light
LEDs used in street lights .This will make a lot of energy saving as the street lights will only operates at there full
capacity when the lights are needed. This will reduce the number of batteries that should be used to rum the street
light .As the consumption of electricity reduces the lesser amount of batteries will be required for the operation of
street lights.
