Development Testing and Integration of a Transradial Prosthetic Device
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryWe are designing a transradial prosthetic arm that will be able to replicate theĀ 3 degrees of freedom (supination-pronation, flexion-extension, adduction-abduction) of a human arm.
Project ObjectivesMost upper limb prosthetics lack functionality due to their limited degrees of freedom, so our main objective is to design a prosthetic wrist that will replicate the motion of an anthropomorphic arm.
Project Implementation MethodThe project is being carried out in phases.
- Research - Problems faced by amputeesĀ in current upper limb prosthetic technology which eventually leads to abandonment; Control of prosthetic etc.
- Conceptual Solutions - We thought of possible solutions that can be used to tackle the lack of functionality of prosthetic arms.
- Selection of Design - After coming up with a few solutions, we jumped to design selection phase.
- Prototyping - Once design was selected, we purchased the material required in order to develop a prototype.
- Design Improvement - Right now, we are further improving the design before moving onto the final fabrication phase.
Increasing degrees of freedom in prosthetic will lead to increasing functionality, which will eventually lead to increased usage by amputees.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe complete working prototype of the prosthetic arm will be integrated with a dummy hand. Once the prosthetic device is fabricated along with its control system, it will be integrated with a dummy hand and tested on some amputees where signals will be sent to the prosthetic device for intended motion using MyoBand.
