Designing efficient cooling system for conventional cars
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe air conditioning (AC) system is the essential component of conventional cars to provide comfort for the user during the drive-in hot season. Despite that, in most of the conventional car's cooling systems i.e. compressors are belt driven through engines which results in more fuel consumption and emission of greenhouse gases especially nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) through the tailpipe. Also, it’s been observed that cooling efficiency decreases on high ways due to increased compressor rpm than the rated one. In this project, a retrofitted solar-based efficient cooling system model will be designed for conventional cars under 900 cc engine capacity especially Mehran car by incorporating a motor-driven compressor independent of an internal combustion engine. The mathematical calculation will be done to find out the corrected motor rating with respect to compressor rpm at the required thermodynamic properties of an AC refrigerant gas for a Mehran car. Controller-based inside car temperature switching monitoring system and electrical parameters i.e. battery backup time, solar power and motor power consumed will be displayed for user convenience. An option of the desired cooling system will also be provided to the user to maintain their comfort level during the drive. Emission and fuel economic analysis will be carried out in terms of using the same conventional car based on an engine-driven compressor relative to a motor-driven compressor.
Project Objectives- Mathematical calculation in designing a proposed system
- Designing a display system i.e. battery backup time, solar power, inside car temperature and motor power consumed
- Designing an automatic on-off temperature control system
- Designing a controller-based battery charge circuit.
- Designing a circuit for motor speed control
- Emission and fuel economic analysis
- Selection of a motor power based on a mathematical calculation of mechanical power for a specific compressor type used in Mehran car with respect to the thermodynamic properties of a refrigerant gas R134a.
- The calculation will be carried out to find desired battery backup time with respect to solar power and motor power rating.
- The simulation will be performed in a Proteus software to check working conditions for the following controller-based circuits i.e. displaying battery backup time, solar power, inside car temperature, motor power consumed, battery charge and motor speed control circuits.
- Practical implementation of aforementioned circuits in a Mehran car with solar panel, batteries, compressor and motor retrofitting.
- Analyzing emission and fuel consumption of a motor-driven compressor Mehran car, retrofitted with solar cooling system relative to engine belt-driven compressor Mehran car.
Solar based retrofitted motor-driven compressors will have the following societal and environmental benefits
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Less economic cost
- Emission reduction of harmful gasses through car’s tailpipe
- Increased car's engine life and performance
The Solar based retrofitted motor-driven compressor Mehran car will be introduced at the end with all its required control circuitry that would be able to cool the car interior to provide comfort during driving.
