Almost 80% of motors in industrial areas are induction motors. Induction motors have many advantages over other motor however it does not inherently have the ability of speed control which makes it inefficient to operate on lighter loads. There is many methods to control the speed of induction motor the best among those is the V/f method. To obtain this objective we will be designing a prototype for speed control of single phase induction motor by V/f control method, which contains full wave rectifier, DC link and an inverter, control circuit is used for inverter to observe ac sine wave output, but the output is not perfectly sine wave and contains harmonics, to remove such harmonics and smoothen the ac output to a sine wave a filter circuit is used at output of inverter before the motor, but this filter is only suitable for particular voltage and frequency values, as we change the voltage and frequency to vary the speed of motor the output waveform will no longer be a perfect sine wave and contains harmonics which are harmful to our system. To address this problem a variable filter circuit is design using power electronic switches, the value of filter circuit changes according to the values of voltage and frequency & fits perfectly to obtain a AC sinusoidal waveform. Hence a efficient and safe operation is obtained for speed control of induction motor.

This proposal provides a brief overview of the design of speed control of single phase induction motor. Speed control of induction motor provides a significant advantage of energy efficient use. The variable filter circuit provides more flexibility in range of speed control of motor than a fixed filter circuit, it also significantly reduces the harmonics generated comparing to the fixed filter circuit design.
