Project Summary

The nanoparticles have attracted an immense attention of the scientific world due to their large surface area to volume ratio and high reactivity with unmatched properties. Nanoparticles play a vital role in every aspect of material science due to their nano size. Optical properties of nanomaterials are also size dependent. In particular, the Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) have great potential in a broad range of applications due to its antimicrobial agents, biomedical device coatings, drug-delivery carriers, imaging probes, and diagnostic and optoelectronic platforms. Also, they have discrete physical and optical properties and biochemical functionality tailored by diverse size- and shape-controlled of AgNPs.

In our research study, a synthesized silver nanoparticles based composite for dental restorations are to be characterized which have more antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, these Silver Nanoparticles by their morphology and anatomy are to be visualized and examined through different tests including  Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV visible spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), and dynamic light Ssattering(DLS) techniques.

This project aims to design and synthesize cost-effective nano-materials based composite that exhibits great antimicrobial properties and can be used as a restorative material.

Project Implementation Method

Project comprises of three stages:

Firstly synthesis of the metallic nanolayered materialas make a Sodium Hydroxide solution and the Colloidal solution of Mg(NO3)2.6H2O (Magnesium Nitrate hexahydrate) with Al(NO3)3.9H2O (Aluminum Nitrate nonahydrate) as ratio of 1:4 in D Ionized water of 500ml. Place the Colloidal solution on stirrer and over it burette filled with sodium hydroxide solution, set outflow as such one drop drain in 5-6 seconds and observe the Ph upto 10. Further pass the mixture through filter paper collect the sample left over on paper then centrifuge it for 2-4 mins and then place it in oven at 50oC for 48hrs. Crush the Sample.

Second stage is the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. For Silver Nanoparticles make solution of NaBH4 (Sodium borohydride)(strong Reducing Agent) and place it in cold environment. Make solution of AgNO3 (Silver Nitrate) and place it over magnetic stirrer at temperature level set to 50oc Afterwards with help of Dropper pour one by one Drop of NaBH4 changing in color illuminate the presence of Silver nanoparticles.

Third Stage is depositing silver over Metallic Nanolayers. This stage includes the nanolayered powder being mixed in the Silver Nanoparticles solution and being placed on the magnetic stirrer for 2 hours. After that filter it and collect the material over filter paper. Dry the sample in oven and characterize it using FTIR, XRD and DLS techniques. Due to non-avaibility of some methods of charaterization, the few samples will be tested from Malaysian University.  

Benefits of the Project

Project benefits include

Availability of a sustainbale material for dental implants with improved strength for dental restoration. The synthesized material will offer higher antimicrobial property, offering cost solution with time efficient processing.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Project includes the synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles, Metallic Nanolayered Material and Silver Nanoparticles based composite. The prepared composite for dental filings will include morphological and anatomical structural characterization using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Moreover, the prepared composite samples would be examined for its antimicrobial compatibility. Finally, we shall present comparision of the prepared composite with the pre-existing dental fillings.
