Project Summary

Geographically, Pakistan is rich in many natural resources including water and sunlight. Currently, the country is going through energy crises and the shortfall in electricity, circulate debt are often reported in NEWS. This shortfall can be reduced by utilizing solar energy. There are millions of government offices including schools, colleges, and universities, work for a minimum of eight hours a day starting from 8 am. The Prime Minister has announced the construction of five million houses on top of the private societies. Along with these houses, the allied facilities will be constructed, resulting in more power consumption. Though Pakistan is moving towards renewable energy, the rate is negligible.

In this proposal, it is proposed that if we convert the conventional building into smart buildings, in which the windows shall be designed smartly. These windows shall be called Smart Solar Windows (SSW). The SSW is automatic windows with transparent glassed solar penal with an objective to find conserved energy not only to meet the future energy demands but also to save energy for our coming generations in a prosperous country.

Although the solar panel has been installed in some places and rooftops of some buildings. Though the system is working properly, to make it more efficient we are planning to design smart solar windows for building to make Energy-efficient buildings. Targeting the Government institution is our priority because of the energy consumption and wastage is large there. Sometimes due to load shading or some other reason the light goes off for even five minutes, then because of no backup system a generator of 200 kW is turned on which consumes a lot of fuel to start hence energy is wasted.

The proposed SSW in the official working hours will provide the alternate to WAPDA, the windows will open to face the sun at the best angle to give us maximum solar energy. The energy generated will be used in the working hours. On weekends the energy can be stored (optional). This SSW may not fulfill the 100% demand of the building but the impact in coming future will be tremendous, due to the emerging highly efficient solar transparent panels. Imagine if we run out of our resources such as furnace oil, diesel, etc. the sun will be out there to serve us through such smart building components.

To conclude, the SSW will be a pilot project and along with the energy provide awareness in the society in general and particularly will knock the doors of the policymakers for their upcoming millions of building projects.

Project Objectives

  1. To learn the contemporary knowledge from literature and apply to the real-world problem.
  2. Design and Analysis of Smart Solar Window (SSW) using CAD tools.
  3. To design the electrical circuit for Smart Solar Window.
  4. To manufacture a prototype of Smart Solar Window using our own resources.

Project Implementation Method

Our project will target the educational institutions, government and official buildings with working hours 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The kick start is at the Department of Industrial Engineering, UET Peshawar Jalozai campus. Currently, at Jalozai campus we are facing 8 to 10 hours of load shedding and backup generators are running for hours to meet the variable demand with a minimum of 20 KW in winter. In peak hours we can generate maximum solar energy from the SSW. It is most suitable for buildings facing the sunlight, and also buildings on the sun-back, although its efficacy will be less than the sun-facing side.

Benefits of the Project

Using solar energy for different purposes gives a lot of benefits to the country and its people. Solar energy is environment-friendly because it does not have any bi-product or waste associated. Solar energy is abundantly available and produces no pollution and needs no fuel. It is very easy to install and is durable. Being situated in the Sun-belt, Pakistan is enriched with sunlight with high intensity. This condition is perfect for harnessing the sun’s capacity for solar-based applications by utilizing solar panels. Despite having such a rich sun based light territory, Pakistan is facing an energy crisis and still, we are not utilizing Allah’s gifted available resources.

A similar kind of project can be adopted in manufacturing industries, the service sector, the food industry, buildings, etc.  Efficient energy systems provide clean and pollution-free energy which is beneficial for both the climate and economy. In summary, the benefits are social, economical and environmental.   

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed SSW prototype can be opened to optimum degrees for maximum absorption of the sun-light. Mechanism has been designed for Aluminum windows, depending upon funding if we get funding for the transparent panel we will install that in the window otherwise for demo purposes we will install the solar panel with 380-400 watts output will be used. In highly efficient transparent panels, surface texturing provides excellent performance in a low light environment. The pre-programmed SSW with sensors and motor-driven will automatically open the window at the desired level or degrees. The whole assembly movement, Arduino Uno controlled, will be remotely controlled. Below are the estimated cost of on the prototype:
