Project Summary

As the world population increases day by day, the area for farming is decreasing. For maximum yield we are designing and implementing a LED grow light that can fulfill the requirement of sunlight for indoor plants. Plants need sunlight for photosynthesis process to make food.A grow light is basically an artificial source of light designed to provide a specific spectrum light suitable for growth process of plants. Grow lights are used in certain area where there is no direct sunlight Like in the cold weather when the day light hours are not enough for proper plant growth. In these situations grow lights are used to extend the day light hours. If plants do not receive enough light, they will not grow properly. Different colors are required at different stages of plants to grow. In seedling stage, plants need blue light. Blue light is helpful for the growth of leaves and vegetables. The combination of red and blue light helps the plant to grow flower. Plants have different stages of growth from seedling to ripening of food. For these stages, plants need specific spectrum of light for their healthy growth.

Project Objectives

Nowadays, using artificial light for cultivating plants is a common practice in developed countries. Lighting fixtures are installed in indoor farms to fulfill the requirement of light. High pressure sodium light is the most used type of growing lamp in agriculture market. HPS lights are deficient in blue spectrum, so an additional bulb is required to help the plant reached its full potential to bloom and flourish.LED grow lights use very less energy as compared to HPS light, and even using less power, produces the same amount of light. The heat produced by LED grow light is very less as compared to HPS light, avoiding additional ventilation system need or airflow. The purpose of the project is to design LED grow light that stimulates the growth of plant and by emitting light appropriate for photosynthesis process.

Project Implementation Method

The proposed design for this project is to implement a LED grow light of specific spectrum. First, the proper combination of CoBs and strips has been selected to attain required lux. After this, constant current driver has been designed to obtain maximum and consistent brightness of CoBs. The hardware implementation is done after finding the optimal distance between CoBs. The optimal distance is designed to maintain uniform lux in certain area. After this, testing has been done to check the lux at different distance. Arduino IDE software is used for software implementation. Arduino function named as EEPROM is used to save the setting enter by the user. A Numeric pad and LCD interfaced with the Arduino mega 2560. Numeric pad is used to enter the data and LCD is used to display temperature and some instructions. The timing of the light required by plants and vegetable are different. And that timing is controlled using the Arduino mega. A relay is controlled by the Arduino mega that controls the ON/OFF time of the grow light. Different instructions feed into the Arduino Mega using Numeric pad for different settings.

Benefits of the Project

LED grow lights can be used for 24 hours a day with little effect on temperature.The use of LED lights enables you to change the daylight hours and the amount of red wavelength light at the exact right time to maximize the plant growth rate. When LED light is used to grow auto flowering plants, multiple harvests are possible in one season. You is able to alter flowering times in plants and increase production.

LED grow lights have a lifespan of over 50,000 hours, which is much longer than traditional lighting systems.LED grow lights are more efficient than traditional lighting systems, consuming 60% less energy to give the same level of light.

LED grow lights enable us to regulate the wavelengths of light, which means we can give plants the exact light they need for photosynthesis.The best LED plant lights produce a balanced full spectrum of light.

LED grow lights are 100% recyclable and environment friendly. Unlike HID lights, they do not contain toxic substances like mercury. To ensure this, all quality LEDs are certified by RoHS.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this project, a grow light is designed with combination of different COB’s, current drivers, LED strips, LCD, Arduino Mega 2560 and Numeric pad. The output of the project is the lighting of the COB’s and the display of the temperature and Main Menu on the LCD.

The hardware of the project contains current drivers, COB’s, LED’s, Push buttons, Fuses, Fans, LCD, Arduino Mega and Numeric pad. Specific spectrum is required for the growth of the plant which the Grow Light is providing with the combination of different COB’S like warm COB’s, cold COB’S, Red and Blue LED strips. this LED grow will provide 30,000 LUx that are enough for plant healthy growth
