Temperature in summer days are normally above 45 °C so there needs a system. Generally sun-shading big umbrellas are used at beaches, swimming pools or in courtyards, more and more of coffee shops or restaurants also use sun-shading big umbrellas on tables’ outdoors not only for sun-shading and rain-shielding but also for providing the mood of being in the suburb. Thereby, the big umbrellas are quite practical. For that purpose, an automated umbrella is required which is equipped with sunlight sensors. It works whenever sun rises in morning, sensors detect light and activates the motor of umbrella. These types of umbrellas are modern and it is used in mosques, parks, beaches and open air cafeterias. It is decided to make an automatic umbrella which meets such technological requirements. Automated umbrella is equipped with DC motor with latest types of sensors and a control system which provides the signal to the motor and motor operates. Good quality sheet is rolled on the roller which operates with the signal of control system to the motor and Sheet is foldable, low weigh the system is easily moveable. System on the continuous beam structure. As outdoor activities are increasing in people day by day want a standard lifestyle also. This umbrella will fulfill the needs of such people. The needs will works and they meet by using suitable stepper motors and multiple sensors. Moreover motor will be solar powered and its cost should be low as possible. The design of project will be such that it meets the professional level in market. The purpose of doing this is to feel comfortable while praying in RCET mosque.

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to design an automated umbrella with sunlight sensors such that the umbrella opens automatically in sun light and closes in the evening.

These are some following main objectives.

  1. Sketch out of conceptual design according to the floor dimension and design or assemble every part in Solidworks.
  2. Analysis for power requirements and structure for design robustness.
  3. For illustration, needs to manufacture prototype.

The purpose of doing this project is to relief people from the sunlight by providing them a comfortable zone in the form of automated umbrella.

Project Implementation Method

                 As we are making automated umbrella for RCET Mosque. The methodology for this purpose is as following.

Our methodology must be more convenient and simple so that a feasible and low cost umbrella can be made. Our plan is to design umbrella structure first and then a source of power to open and close it i.e motor of suitable torque, rpm and other specefications.

First of all we will install horizontal supports so that umbrella can easily mount and move on it. This support is like a continuous beam. To support this beam there must be vertical columns. Due to the ceiling fans in the yard of the Mosque an initial frame structure is already available for the horizontal supports of umbrella but we must have to increase the strength of this structure  in order to install the beam.

A uniform distributed load in form umbrella sheet will apply on the beam so all the design  calculations will be made according to the nature of the beam and the load.

After that a suitable sheet will be selected according to the weather conditions of the region. Material of the sheet will be nylon taffeta because it is smooth, fine, soft, lightweight  and have quick-drying properties.

The absorbance of heat depends upon the colour. Darker the colour more will be the heat absorbed by the umbrella so a suitable color should be selected according to the intensity of sunlight.

After this we will attach a fixed beam on the front wall of the yard of the Mosque. This beam will like a circular rod and ball bearings will use to support it from both ends so that it can easily rotate to roll and unroll the umbrella. Power will transmit from servo motor to beam through some suitable transimssion mechanism i.e (pulleys).

A temperature sensor will use to operate the motor and it will also control the motor movement When temperaure will exceed from 35 the sensor will operate the motor and umbrella will open. Similarly vice versa.

 Electrical energy will be given to the motor through battery and this will be a dry battery charged by solar panel.

Solar panel will placed at the roof of the Mosque so that sunlight can directly act on it.

At the last before starting the practical work we will make a prototype according to the methodology given below.
