Project Title

Design and Development of IoT Network for Smart Aquaponics

Project Area of Specialization

Internet of Things

Project Summary

Traditional farming techniques require abundant agricultural land and water resources. This results in increased cost of land, transportation and labor. Aquaponics focuses on providing organic crop production compared to traditional agricultural techniques, in a pollution-free and fuel-efficient manner.

We are designing and developing IoT mesh network for the aquaponics farm located at SEECS. We are integrating several commercial sensors (pH Sensor, temperature sensor... etc) and motors via mesh node and send data to cloud via WiFi gateway. The data will be visualized in real time on aquaponics web-portal and also on android mobile application.

Project Objectives

Objectives of this project are:

  • To design efficient system of aquaponics for proper growth of plants and fishes in farm.
  • To design a proper IOT network for sensors required for monitring of farm.
  • To develop power efficient and eco-friendly prototyoes.
  • To minimize the human interference during the cultivation process and increase the food output compared to traditional farming techniques.

Project Implementation Method

Here 1st diagram shows the aquaponics system where first fishes are fed, waste produced by plants in water is pumped by motor to pass from Biofilter and got to plants. The water travels through, where plants are grown inside a different PVC structure. There ammonia in the water is reduced to nitrates, absorbed by the plants. The purified water is fed back to the aquaculture, as it is now harmless to the fish.

For proper functioning of this system, In diagram 2 we use sensors in fish tank to monitor pH level, Temperature of water, Electrical Conductivity and Dissolved Oxygen and water flow. We also instlled some other features like fire Alarm, Automated Ac which also controlled by mobile application we developed, and camera for anomly detection. These all sensors are connected to micrcontroller which collect data. Then this data will send to server and visualized in real time on aquaponics web-portal and also on android mobile application. Below are some pictures of actual sensors use in farm. We also have other sensors intalled as mentioned above but not provided in pictures now.

Benefits of the Project

  • Reduces Water Usage.
  • No Soil, No Weeding.
  • Food is Grown All Year Round.
  • Accelerated Plant Growth.
  • Reduces the Planet's Carbon Footprint.
  • Supports a Self-Sufficient Way of Living.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Sensors installed in fish tank collect data like pH, dissolved oxygen etc from water and transfer it to microcontroller. The sensors are interfaced with the Micro Controller Unit which communicates with the main server and sends sensor values.

The microcontroller will be communicating with the main server (central device) which is based on axino mesh module. All the sensors connected with a axino mesh module which collect data from sensor and send it to cloud using axino mesh gateway, shown in figure 3.

Axino gateway transfer all the data of sensors to axino website where it store it and transfer it to our website and mobile application. This is all loop of technical detail where all the data of sensors shown on mobile application and website application. And give alert message whenever data is lower to threshold.
