Project Summary

Pressure vessels are commonly used to hold liquid or gases at high pressure that is different from the ambient pressure. The outer layer of pressure vessels used nowadays are usually made of aluminum alloys and steel. Pressure vessels that are lightweight show better performance. The purpose of the project is to manufacture a composite material pressure vessel. The composite material used is carbon fiber reinforced polymer. The performance of pressure vessel improves due to composite material which is lightweight and have high strength. A significant amount of material is saved when composite material is used instead of conventional metal alloys. Another major advantage of composite pressure vessels is that any crack or deformity in the material is under control so the explosion of vessels can be avoided. The main objective of the project is to develop a low cost, with good strength to weight ratio, composite material pressure vessel and then to convert it into a commercialized product. The simulation will be performed with the help of experimental data on ANSYS software. The project will be supervised by an expert in the composite material field.

Project Objectives

?    To decide the thickness of composite material in a pressure vessel.
?    Composite pressure vessel construction to obtain better strength to weight ratio to hold fluid at very high pressure without explosion of vessels.
?    To perform a simulation with the data obtained from experimentation.

Project Implementation Method

•    Literature review.
•    Thick and thin Composite Pressure Vessel properties.
•    Aluminum alloy or steel for internal surface construction of the vessel.
•    Selection of composite material (carbon-epoxy, glass-epoxy or aramid-epoxy composites). 
•    Varying the thickness of the vessel for optimized results.
•    Arrangement of composite material on the outer surface of the vessel to withstand the loadings and internal pressure.
•    The experimental results will be used in ANSYS Software to simulate loadings and pressure inside the vessel.
•    Fabrication.
•    Thesis.

•    Lower weight and high strength.
•    Gases and liquids can be contained at very high pressure.
•    No sparkling when hit or rubbed against another object.
•    High chemical durability.
•    Possibility of gas evacuation if any leakages occur (but not burst), which minimizes the danger of the vessel breaking apart.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The pressure vessel will be constructed using a composite material with good strength to weight ratio and having low cost. High-pressure gas will be held in the vessel and loading will be applied on the vessel to ensure its strength. The experimental results will be used to perform the simulation.
