Many operations are performed in industries to obtain the final product. And these operations are performed with the help of many machines. Yet drilling is one of the important operations in any industry. Most of these operations are performed with the help of bench drilling machines. But due to less space between drill bed and drill bit, it fails to perform many operations. Our drilling machine can turn around all sides, which is efficient than traditional drilling machines as they require a lot of space while aren’t capable to drill all sides. Traditional drilling machines often drill in one particular direction and don’t have 360-degree drilling mobility. Our multi directional drilling machine is based on Dc powered motor. Which uses direct current for operation which is less costly as well and DC current can be obtained from sun light in remote areas using PV cells. Our drilling machine is capable to drill in materials depending on its strength. This drilling machine is combination of both hand drill machine and bench drilling machine which is designed to lower the energy consumption taken place in drilling and also to save time. This machine provides more flexibility to move in any direction because of its construction.  This drilling machine is made in such way that it can rotate in circular direction and various linkages and arms provide flexibility to the drilling machine. Dc powered motor with drill chuck mounted on it, is used to rotate the drill bit to perform the drilling operations.

Project Implementation Method

The drill machine consists of a dc motor which is powered by an electric source. We used 12v battery as a power source for the drilling machine in our project. A drill chuck is mounted on the shaft of the dc motor.  The drill chuck is used to clamp and hold the drill bit. Drill machine is consisted of two working arms. Categorized as primary and secondary arms. Primary arm supports the whole structure and provide 360-degree rotation with respect to base. Drill machine is mounted to secondary arm, which consist of two telescopic arms. Secondary arm slides over primary arm and provide 360-degree rotation with respect to base. With the help of telescopic arms our drill machine can reach any desired location. Our flexible drilling machine can drill both horizontal and vertical directions providing 360 drilling rotation.

Benefits of the Project

Drilling machines are very essential and hold great importance in any industry. Whole motivation comes from the issue of high energy consumption, placement and flexibility factor, present in conventional drilling machines. High energy consumption increases the total cost and therefore drilling has become very expensive. Specially in countries like Pakistan where government is raising electricity prices constantly over years to pay the circular debt [1]. Due to which industries are greatly affected. Especially the small industries as they’re the one who suffer the most as machines can ever hardly run at full capacity [2]. We were motivated to fabricate a Dc powered multi directional drilling machine, which will ultimately lower the cost of drilling and also result in flexibility and provide portability in drilling operations. We can also fit grinder or spinner in the drilling machine by removing a nut bolt only. So, this machine can be modified for 3 in 1 operation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In the Modern age industries require such a machine which are more efficient, have high accuracy, portable and can be used for mass production. Drilling machines are the heart of every industry. Most of the drilling machines used today are not that portable, energy efficient and are expensive. They were designed keeping in view, few factors like mass production and better drilling efficiency only which are important but other few factors were continuously ignored. Small industries face a lot of challenges while installing a plant especially in rural areas and developing countries like Pakistan where we don’t have enough power and drilling machines are expensive. Daily power blackouts are damaging our industry. Moreover, traditional drilling machines often drill in one particular direction and don’t have 360-degree drilling mobility. Moreover, AC motors have high electricity consumption as compared to DC motors. So, Introduction of an DC motor multi directional drilling machine in market will be huge success. As it reduces the time needed for drilling operation because you don’t need to clamp the material again and again in work piece to drill in different vertical and horizontal directions, it eliminates re-clamping of material while providing 360-degree drilling which saves a lot of time. As our drilling machines operates on Dc motor which being energy efficient can also easily run on PV cells which is best option for the areas where the facilities like electricity is not available but have excess solar radiation. our multi directional flexible drilling machine is compact, portable and easy to operate. Our drill machine can move in any direction with respect to surrounding. In many industries specially ones in Pakistan, safety precautions are poorly followed. Many factories don’t ensure safety measures for their workers which it is dangerous as we sometime have to drill in wet areas which pose a risk of electric shock. that why we have come up with the idea of multi directional energy efficient and flexible drilling machine that would reduce accidental risk as well.
