Project Title

Data communication using lifi

Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject Summary

Li-Fi is the approaching and developing technology The concept of Li-Fi is offering a great deal of interest because it can offer efficient alternative to radio-based wireless technology. If this technology is put into practical use, every bulb can be used like a Wi-Fi hotspot to transmit wireless data and the world will proceed towards a cleaner, greener, safer and brighter future. In future one can use micro LEDs for data transmission which flickers at a much higher rate than ordinary LEDs and in turn provides higher speed. A cluster of LED s or tube of LED  can be used for parallel data transmission. LEDs of different colors such as red, green and blue can be used to enhance the transmission rate.

As light is everywhere and loose to use, there's a remarkable scope for the use and evolution of Li-Fi generation. If this technology becomes mature, each Li-Fi bulb can be used to transmit Wi-Fi data. The idea of Li-Fi is deriving many humans as it's far free (require no license) and faster means of information transfer. If it evolves faster, human beings will use this generation increasingly more.

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project are as follows.

To create an application that transmits data be it text, audio or video using Li-Fi technology for coping with the limited bandwidth problem we face in RF (Radio frequency) signals. For better, efficient, secure and a faster connection Li-Fi is used. One of the advantages of using Li-Fi over Wi-Fi is that it avoids radiation produced by Wi-Fi. The goal of our project is to transfer data with faster speed which is not easy to achieve through Wi-Fi and see whether transmission is possible through various mediums or not.

Project Implementation Method

LEDs form the core of Li-Fi technology. The logic used in Li-Fi technology is very simple. If the LED is ON its means a digital 1 is transmitted. If the LED is OFF it means a digital 0 is transmitted. These LEDs can be switched ON and OFF very speedily which gives a good opportunity for the transmission of data through light. The working of Light Fidelity is simple to understand. There is a light emitter on one side, for example, an LED with a photo detector and on the other side a light sensor

The photo detector saves a binary 1 when the LED is ON and a binary 0 if the LED is OFF. To generate a message, flash the LED number of times or use multiple of LEDs in the form of an array with few colors if possible, to gain data rates in the range of 100s of mbps.

Benefits of the Project

Table 1 Comparison between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi

Li-Fi

                     Wi-Fi

                   Li-Fi

a) Capacity:

The radio waves used by Wi-Fi to transmit data are limited as well as expensive. The amount of available spectrum is running out.

The visible light spectrum is 10,000 times wider than the spectrum of radio waves. Additionally, the light sources are already installed.

b) Availability:

Radio waves cannot be used in all environments, particularly in airplanes, chemical and power plants and in hospitals.

Light sources are present in all corners of the world. Hence, availability is not an issue. The billions of light bulbs worldwide need only be replaced by LEDs.

d) Security:

Radio waves can penetrate through walls. This leads to many security concerns as they can be easily intercepted.

Light of course does not penetrate through walls and thus data transmission using light waves is more secure.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Implementation of Li-Fi used technology as a prototype that can communicate or broadcast data.

Hardware:

There are two sections in hardware one is Transmitter and second one is Receiver. Transmitter send data to Receiver.

Software:

Task of data conversion and statistics of transfer rate would be acheive through matlab.
