CHARACTERIZATION OF HEMPCRETE
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryPROJECT SUMMARY
In the last years, society has been looking at sustainability of construction which subsequently leads to the search of new and more reliable materials. One idea was to use the cellulose aggregate concrete (CAC). Hempcrete is a construction material which is made from hemp fibres, lime binder and water and this will results in aggregates reduction and it will also saves natural resources. A comprehensive experimental study has been done to investigate mechanical behavior, four concrete mixes were formed: a control mix (no fibers) and the rest 3 were hemp-concrete mixes with 5%, 10% and 15% hemp material by concrete volume. All these samples were prepared with mixture of cement, sand, fibers and water and without fly-ashes and binder. The mixed specimens are casted for cubes. Furthermore, these samples were tested for compressive strength.
Project ObjectivesPROJECT OBJECTIVES
The objective of this project is to study and use hemp fiber in construction material as hempcrete to make light weight and non-toxic sustainable material for non-load bearing applications to reduce carbon foot print, embodied energy of building and provides excellent thermal and acoustic insulation.
Project Implementation MethodPROJECT IMPLEMENTATION METHOD
- Literature review was done in order to have proper understanding of hemp fibre.
- Collection of raw material.
- Casting of cubes was done by varying fibre concentration.
- Initial testing of casted cubes was performed to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of hemp fibre.
- Discussions and conclusions on the results obtained.
BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
The benefits of this study is to work on natural fibers like hemp fibers, to reduce the carbon dioxide emission so reduce global warming gases with in the limit of standard mechanical properties and gives construction industry a sustainable mortar formulation.
This research and work will bring an immense significance in construction industry for the production in the green building solution and moving toward the sustainable material than conventional one.
