Detecting and identifying targets of interest automatically is an important capability in many military and civilian applications. The research project involves the development of a system that can automatically detect and identify the targets of interest using a variety of techniques and algorithms. Defense forces of different countries across the world are installing Automatic Target Detection (ATD) systems on their vehicles used on land, naval, airborne, and space platforms. With this proposed system, it has been possible to develop effective warfare systems that are less dependent on human input.
An automatic detection and identification system for targets already exist. The biggest problem with existing systems is that they cannot detect targets in real-time. In the proposed system, the target will be detected and identified automatically by incorporating auto-tracking algorithms into Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) Position Controllers.
Project ObjectivesObjectives of Project:
Following are the main objectives for this project;
- To use and integrate existing/military-specific hardware.
- To develop Real-time Automatic Target Detection & Identification Systems.
- To use Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning techniques to correctly detect and Classify targets.
Project Implementation Method:
- Several strategies will be utilized to construct the desired system, and a suitable Camera up to 10x, Nano Jetson, DC Motor 12V with Optical Encoder (Servo Motor), DC Motor Driver, Arduino (Mega), Digital Screen Panel will be proposed, purchased, tested, and installed.
- First, using relevant AI techniques to design auto-tracking algorithms which will be more intelligent to identify whether the target is a human, Armour vehicle, or tank.
- Then, design a PID controller which should be able to control the position of the sensor and make decisions according to the auto-tracking algorithms. As the target move, the system will move accordingly in 360o.
- To accomplish this task, we have to use Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning techniques to correctly detect and identify targets of interest in real-time.

The obtained results will contribute to many defense forces of different countries across the world are installing Automatic Target Detection (ATD) systems on their vehicles used on land, naval, airborne, and space platforms. With this proposed system, it has been possible to develop effective warfare systems that are less dependent on human input.
