An Intelligent MPPT Battery Charger with Cloud-Based Real Time Monitoring
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryWhen a Solar Panel is exposed to sunlight, the (Current-Voltage) I-V characteristic of the solar panel is observed. The (Current-Voltage) I-V properties of PV Panels change constantly with the temperature and irradiance level, which also change the MPPT (Maximum Power Point) of PV panels. This impacts the charging process of the batteries attach to the solar panels. The Incremental Conductance algorithm is used to track MPPT. The MPPT Tracking Algorithm works with DC-DC Isolated Buck-Boost Converter. Power from solar Panels is giving to the Solar Charge Controller, which is equal to the battery voltage of PV voltage, which provides Maximum power to the batteries from PV panels.Rasp Berry Pi microcontroller is used which constantly tracks the MPPT despite changing conditions and helps to the charge the battery voltage. The MPPT system uses a Wi-Fi module (ESP-8266) for data acquisition and can be utilized to consider the state of the battery and help for maintenance. A Proteus Based Modeling and simulation is planned which is used to verify the algorithm as well as SSC (Solar Charge Controller) in varying conditions and then implement on the hardware. Simulated result show that the Algorithm tracks the MPPT point of PV panels, including hardware output that confirms the efficient working of the proposed system.
Project Objectives1) To produce an optimum energy from renewable energy source.
2) To increase the efficiency factor as compare to other modules.
3) To reduce the effect of eddy current.
4) To maximize the energy production.
Project Implementation MethodFor this project we will use a microcontroller which provides a feedback for the MPPT solar charge controller. A DC-DC isolated Buck-Boost converter is also designed for stepping up and down voltages at the load side.
In order to drive the mosfet of isolated Buck-Boost converter we use the mosfet driver circuit. after that we design the current and voltage sensors at input and output side.
We will use incremental conductance algorithm that will be burn in arduino . This algorithm will compare input and output voltages and it will increment or decrement voltages according to set values.
A 12V,24V,48V DC Batteries will be used . The protection Circuit for all types of batteries will also be design. Over Voltage , Over Current and Reverse Polarity Protection.
At output side we will design DC to AC converter So that it can also feed AC appliances.
We will use esp-8266 wifi module for online monitoring of the parameters like input voltages and current, And also output voltages and current.
Benefits of the ProjectThe MPPT controller allows a panel array to be of higher voltage than the battery bank. This is relevant for areas with low irradiation or during winter with fewer hours of sunlight.
The efficiency of MPPT is 30% higher than the PWM controller.
MPPT Provides greater flexibility for system growth.
The Lifespan of MPPT controllers is longer as compare to PWM controllers.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe strategies are used to keep the operating point of the PV array at its maximum power point (MPP) and collect the maximum power possible.
The complexity, cost, speed of convergence, sensors required, hardware implementation, and effectiveness of these techniques varies.
The algorithm we're applying can correct misjudgment during irradiance variation, and the tracking speed can be boosted by 20% to 30% depending on the irradiance variation range. It not only eliminates the misjudgment effect when the irradiance varies, but it also enhances the system's response speed, lowers power loss during the tracking process, and boosts the system's output efficiency.
