Project Summary

Smart meter technology has revolutionized the power management infrastructure in the world. However, problems such as line theft and the high cost of production are still prevalent. There is a need to establish a robust infrastructure through which power management can be done more efficiently. Our project will present a possible solution to issues such as the ability to automatically and remotely measure energy usage, detect tampering, monitor power quality, and allow for superior functionality in terms of data communication, metering, and control. Using Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), consumers’ operations can be inspected to provide them with detailed information about their electrical consumption so they can make better decisions concerning saving electricity, as well as implementing energy management systems for automatic generation/consumption regulation.

Project Objectives

1) Artificial Intelligence-based smart metering: It will cater to the need for intelligent techniques to provide different sorts of information to utilities and consumers, improving their knowledge about energy use, efficiency, costs, consequently improving energy management.

2)Theft management: Energy theft occurs when a customer manipulates the energy usage statistics provided to the utility. An adversary may attempt to manipulate usage data as it is collected, stored, or transmitted.

3)Power line carrier communication: PLCC makes it easier to detect signal interruptions to identify power theft, helping to ensure security and grid reliability.

4)Power Quality Analysis: Poor power quality is caused by excessive reactive power and harmonic distortion. Therefore, analyzing power is of paramount importance. This could help give indicators to the concerned parties a head-start warning so they can fix this drawback that can affect millions of customers.

5)Bi-directional metering: The rise in the interest in renewable energy has been profound. A smart meter helps with the integration of such energies by allowing the unused power from those energies to be “exchanged” and be compensated. Therefore, saving power and making an overall more efficient system.

Project Implementation Method

Our AMI system takes the advantage of a microcontroller's ADC to read accurate power consumption on a bi-directional meter with the help of voltage sensors and current sensors. Which then Applies an ML model on the existing data for a future prediction and encryption of the data which is sent to the cloud and the smart grid.

Benefits of the Project

Our project aims to be beneficial to both the energy supplier and the millions of consumers in Pakistan.  With machine learning being used to predict a consumer’s future energy use which will help the supplier and the consumer. So, they can take care of the power consumed and ensure there is a lower power loss. In Pakistan there has always been a threat of meter tampering therefore, we intend to use encryption to keep the consumer's data secure and ensure there is no malicious tampering done by third-party. 
 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable
