Advance Driving Assistive System
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryNearly 1.25 million people die each year in road accidents and road crashes cost low and middle-income countries USD $65 billion annually. These days automotive industry is trying hard to automated vehicles to provide better solutions to road safety. However these solutions are expensive and not currently popular in mainstream.
The Advanced Driving Assistive System (ADAS) is aimed to enhance and automate vehicle safety and provide a smart solution to driving with ease. Our ADAS module is aimed as an add-on module for vehicles with multiple features especially for low-middle income countries. The ADAS module inserted in manual vehicles can provide the driver same benefits like those provided by automatic vehicles.
Its most significant feature is Forward Collision Warning system which helps the driver to stay well within range from an object in front whether at rest or in motion. The module follows the internationally set safe speed to distance ratios and automatically informs if the driver exceeds the set
limits.
The OverSpeeding feature of ADAS helps driver in keeping within the limits of speed limit set by traffic police. The module alarms the driver if he is nearing the speed limit, so the driver gets time to react. The Lane Detection Feature helps keep driver within the lane he is travelling in and gives out a sound if the driver switches between lanes so the driver is always aware of his lane. This driving solution is designed to well suit the needs and requirements of an average driver with simple and user friendly display and warning signs.
Project ObjectivesThe objective of our project is to provide a smart yet inexpensive solution to reducing human error, probability of road accidents and driver safety. It aims to not only provide safety but comfort to the driver too. The system is aimed at assisting the driver in most critical situation and warn the driver of a possible crash/accident well in time. It is aimed to provide an inexpensive solution for all especially drivers of manual vehicles. The project is an ideal solution for all types of vehicles in Pakistan.
Project Implementation MethodOut ADAS module implements the Overspeeding feature by getting speed measurement from GPS module and compares the current speed of the vehicle with the speed limit of the road. The speed limit of the road is known beforehand. If it is a cloudy or rainy day in which case GPS would not give accurate values, the humidity sensor helps signal a warning sign and then the speed measurement is taken from an IR sensor placed in the wheel of the vehicle.
In the Forward Collision Warning system the distance of the vehicle from the object in front is measured by sonars placed in the front. The values of speed measured by GPS/IR sensor and distance measured by sonar then proved a safe speed to distance ratio that the driver must keep from the next object.
The Lane Detection is carried out by a picam placed in front of the module. Raspberry Pi 3 is connected to picam to carry out image processing to detect the two lines of road lanes. If the vehicle moves in one direction and loses sight of one lane then a warning signal is generated for the drier. it works on the principle of SURF algorithm. In this algorithm a reference image is given or feeded before getting into operation. pi cam takes the picture and match the interesting data points side by side and detects the image.
Benefits of the ProjectThere are numerous solutions in market in the form of automatic cars but those are expensive and not in everyone’s reach. Our project is directed to reduce road accidents by giving same features to drivers of all types of vehicles. This hence has no competitor in the current market. This one of a kind solution for reducing road accidents has no competitor in the market yet and poses as an ideal solution for developing countries like Pakistan. With this add-on feature for manual vehicles, there will be reduced pressure on imported automatic vehicles.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableProject consist of a module that have GPS installed in it. through this GPS we can find the overspeeding, speed limits, speed to distance ratio from front and backside. In our sensor there should be maintaining of 1 meter distance at 3 km/h speed.
Rasberry pi also installed for image processing of traffic light signals and different sign boards. it works on SURF algorithm who extracts features from an image and detect the good points of interests.
