Project Summary

The analog transmission using AM (Amplitude Modulation) and FM (Frequency Modulation) techniques is still commonly used due to its simplicity, inexpensiveness and reliability than the state of the art digital counterparts. The problems with AM/FM modulation are it consumes more bandwidth, quality of transmission is not good and transmission is not secure. Therefore a digital transmission system is required that uses existing protocols and gives advanced features. In this project, we presented a Software Defined Digital Radio Mondiale (SDDRM) broadcasting system that transfers the Information securely over a wide geographical area. The system uses configurable Radio Frequency (RF) front-end, High-Performance Computing (HPC) system and easy to use programming environment. 

Project Objectives

  • A high-performance Digital Radio Mondiale for a wide range of applications.
  • The system can be programmable using programming languages or data flow programming.
  • Gives high performance for different applications at the real-time environment.

Project Implementation Method

The DRM architecture depends upon seven systems, the Back-end System, the Configurable Radio Frequency System, the High-Performance Computing System, the Programming Environment Application and the User Front-end System.

The Back-end System uses multiple antennas to receive and broadcast the electromagnetic wave between the range of 20 KHz to 6 GHz. While transmission, the Configurable Radio Frequency System (CRFS) takes digital data from the High-Performance Computing System, converts into analog base-band signal and modulate it on at the programmed carrier frequency. At the time of receiving the CRFS takes RF signals, demodulate and used ADC to convert a signal into digital form. The HighPerformance Computing System (HPCS) is utilized for software signal processing. The SDDRM applies multi-core RISC processor for application processing. SDDRM Front-end System takes the data from the user using Mic or Keypad and transmits it for the communication to the processing system. The SDR Based DRM provides Software Development Environment (SDE) in order to formulate functions.

  • Programmable due to digitizing analog radio bands such as ShortWave/Medium-Wave/Frequency-Modulation (SW/MW/FM) and other VHF bands.

  • It can be used for both public and industrial transmissions for national, regional and international coverage.
  • Save broadcasters up to 80% in energy and maintenance costs

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable product will be a flexible, programmable and secure device which would be able to perform multiple telecommunication tasks and applications due to programmable multi-core processors and software environment without changing the hardware.
