Project Summary

Bidirectional  series resonant (BSR) converter and its control stratedies have been developed Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that key features of the BSR converterare as follow:

  1. ) Bidirectional voltage andpower flow regulation with a fixed frequency PWM control strategy, which makes the implementation and control of the BSR converter easily.
  2. ) The normalizedvoltage  gain is only determined by the effective duty cycles of the primary and secondary switches and nothing to do with the amplitude and direction of the transferred power.
  3. )Buck and Boost voltage conversion capabilities in both fowared and backward modes..which makes the  proposed converter  a promising candidate  for  bidirectional power conversion aplications with widevoltagerange,e.g. battery or super-capacitor energy storage systems in DC microgrids.
  4. )Smooth and automatic mode transition has been achieved easily because of the simple control and unique voltage gain characteristics of the simple control and unique voltage gain characteristicsof the proposed BSR converter.
  5. )Zero-voltage-switching of all the active switches within the entire voltage and load ranges with the help of an auxiliary inductor.The circulating energy for soft-switching is low because the converter always operates at the series resonant frequency.

Project Objectives

1)To implement a dual active bridge bidirectional series DC to DC converter in closed loop featuring zero voltage switching.

2)How to achieve high efficency, high power density by using bidirectional DC-DC power conversion in a wide voltage range for DC microgrid.

Benefits of the Project

  1. Saving the domestic electrical energy consumed by the DC gadgets in thousands of AC to DC conversions by just doing one conversion in DC micro grid system.
  2. The Bidirectional DC to DC converter can be used on HVDC level because bidirectional gain independent converters promise a feasible and reliable solution for energy conservation and sharing.
  3. This project can be marketed in future when DC microgrid will be a part of distribution system due to the quality of bidrectional power flow ,this project can be used for power exchange between two countries on HVDC lines.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

 First the power is transferring from primary side tothe secondary side of the converter showing the forward mode of operationan then the power is transferring from secondary side to primary sideof the converter showing the backword mode of operation.The waveform in the forward as well as in the backward mode are exactly the same due to symmetrical operationand the symmetry of the circuit. the only difference is the direction of the waveform of current through resonant inductor and in the waveform of voltage through resonant capacitor.A series LC tank is connectedd between the two sides of the bidirectional series resonant converter to resonant at the resonant frequency of the LC resonant tank.We use Arduino as a controller.
