3D Modeling and Printing for Dental Assistance
Project Area of Specialization 3D/4D PrintingProject SummaryThree-dimensional (3D) printing is a rapidly expanding method of manufacturing that has found numerous applications in healthcare. Its applications in the medical industry are revolutionizing the way surgeries are to be carried out, surgical planning, prosthetics, and other applications. It represents a big opportunity to help pharmaceutical and medical companies to create more specific drugs, enabling rapid production of medical implants, and changing the way that doctors and surgeons plan procedures. Its flexibility allows designers to make changes easily without the need to set up additional equipment or tools. These capabilities have sparked huge interest in the 3D printing of medical devices, allowing manufacturers to create devices that match exactly a patient’s anatomy. In the future, 3D-printed implantable organs will probably be available, reducing the waiting lists and increasing the number of lives saved. Hence, our main goal is to review the ongoing and emerging forms of 3D printing and demonstrate by deep research of the 3D-printing applications in dentistry, its usefulness and drawbacks, and how powerful technology it is. The technology has a particular resonance with dentistry using advances in 3D imaging and modeling technologies such as Computed Tomography, X-Ray, and Intraoral Scanning. It provides the surgeons with time for analyzing, before performing the actual surgery which also reduces the possibility of surgical errors that may occur at certain times due to the wrong selection of tools. It also provides dentists with precise replicas, dental implants, and corrective appliances that can be designed to fit better, look better, and work better than ever before for each patient. The project is based upon designing and developing a 3D model from the obtained digital information of a patient. This 3D image will be interfaced with a self-designed 3D printer to obtain a final 3D module. The guiding idea behind our project is to avail medical applications of 3D printing for better health care, especially in dentistry. In this project, we are using digital information (such as CT scan or X-ray) to make 3D models in form of STL, DICOM, MIX, OBJ, STEP, X3D files, etc which will further be turned into a real model using our 3D printer. We can also slice/personalize our 3D model concerning the requirements.
Project ObjectivesThe main objectives of the project are as follows:
- Design and implement a working 3D printer that is cost-efficient with the least possible error.
- Convert 2D digital information into a 3D image model.
- Editing the 3D image according to the requirement and then interfacing it to the Hardware.
- Literature review alongside process planning.
- Understanding the implementation details of both Hardware and Software.
- Reviewing all the necessary requirements for our Hardware.
- Selection and Purchase of Hardware tools and equipment.
- Building the 3D Printer.
- Programming the Hardware and testing it for errors.
- Selection of a suitable technique and software to convert our 2D digital information into a 3D design.
- Editing 3D design and adjusting its dimensions according to the requirements.
- Interfacing the Software with the Hardware.
- Initiate a printing sequence.
- Testing for errors.
- Patient Friendly.
- Time-saving.
- Cost-efficient.
- It is possible to print complex geometric dental models and interlocking parts that require no assembly.
- Accurate details and reproduction of scan providing good quality of work and consistent results.
- 3D Printed surgical guides, leading to predictable surgeries.
- Medical models helping surgeons to train.
- Overcoming limitations for dentists.
- Bioprinting of complex external Organs such as skin.
- Implants or living organs printed in the human body during operations is another anticipated future trend.
- Robotic bioprinting and robot-assisted surgery.
- Reconstructing bones and body parts in forensic pathology.
- Repair partially damaged, diseased, or malfunctioning internal organs.
