wireless power transfer

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

The project seeks to eliminate the use of wires in the transmission of power from the
source to the device to be powered. Although WPT is based on electromagnetic
induction, there are various methods that are used. Some are less efficient than
others and costly while others don’t allow for a longer range of transmission. In this
project, it is required to design and construct an electronic device that shall transmit
power within a small range. The device can then be used to charge batteries for
devices like pace makers. In the project a suitable method will be used to ensure
that enough power is transmitted wirelessly so that it can then charge batteries. The
major challenge will be in the coupling circuit which comprises of the coils where
electromagnetic induction occurs. The number of turns of the coil, inductance.

Project Objectives

The overall goal of this project is to design and successfully implement a wireless
power transmission system. The system will work by using resonant coils to transmit
power from an AC line in the ceiling to various devices. The major objective is to
achieve Wireless power transfer via resonant inductive coupling between the
transmitting and receiving coils in the near field. To demonstrate that power is
successfully transferred wirelessly, an LED, a battery and a DC fan is used.

Project Implementation Method

The magnetic field strength between the two coils has been investigated to set the
optimum parameters between the sending coil and receiving coil used in the WPT
system. These values have been studied at different distances between the two
coils. The first stage to obtain the maximum WPT value for EVs charging is an
accurate simulation model. FEM is adopted for finding the accurate simulation of the
magnetic field strength by satisfying the boundary conditions with Maxwell’s time-
varying equations. The software used is COMSOL Multiphysics program with the
concept of FEM [19]. The applications of COMSOL Multiphysics in power systems
have been raised in recent investigation research

Benefits of the Project

The technology of wireless power transmission can eliminate the use of the wires
and batteries, thus increasing the mobility, convenience, and safety of an electronic
device for all users. Wireless power transfer is useful to power electrical devices
where interconnecting wires are inconvenient, hazardous, or are not possible.
? The largest application of the WPT is the production of power by placing
satellites with giant solar arrays in Geosynchronous Earth Orbit and
transmitting the power as microwaves to the earth known as Solar Power
Satellites (SPS).
? WPT is used in moving targets like fuel-free-electric vehicles, fuel- free
airplanes, fuel-free rockets and moving robots.
? The other applications of WPT are Wireless power source or Ubiquitous
Power Source, RF Power Adaptive Rectifying Circuits and Wireless sensors.
In this way, one can design a wireless-power-transfer system for  simple electronic
devices like mobile charges, mobile phones which not only reduces the risk of
shock, but also the efforts to plug repeatedly into the sockets. We hope that this
article might have provided some basic insights about the wireless power transfer to
you.
