Weathering Chamber for insulator testing
This Chamber deals with the aging of composite insulators.Insulators are placed in an accelerated weathering environment where weather conditions are applied on them for a specific period of time and tafter that some high quality tests are performed on them to prdict the average life of insulators wether they are polymeric or composite.
Project Objective is to design a chamber that applies accelerated weathering conditions on composite and polymeric insulators and after that these insulators are tested to perdict which one of them is better to use on industrial and domestic level.
A chamber made up of acrylic sheets with dimension 1×2×1 m3 was fabricated for simulation of environmental
stresses. In the chamber, samples were continuously
energized at 2500 V AC (R.M.S) voltage. The actual service data was obtained and then according to
standard these stresses were applied in accelerated manner. Five months including May-September were
selected as summer cycle and 7 months October-December and January-April were used as winter cycle.
Total lab year was simulated in 672 hours. Consequently summer cycle was 264 hours and winter cycle was 408 hours. In summer temperature was kept 47.3 0C and in winter 35.2 0C. This was calculated by taking averages of maximum temperatures of each month and then adding 110C towards heating of surface. For this purpose
variable heater was used. Similarly UV-A radiations, acid rain and salt fog were applied as given in detail
in Table 03. For UV radiation UVA-360 lamps were used and HCl solution was used for acid rain. A pot
of water was put in chamber to provide humidity.
This project will benifit our insulator industry to enhance the qulaity of insulators to be produced in futute and to perdict which insulators should be used on domestic level.Because this project will tell you in a short period of time that how insulators will react to different weather conditions.
This project in its final form is able to perform all aging processes on insulators and after that these insulators can be tested to perdict their average life and to compare them with each other that which insulators we should use on domestic level.
