Project Title

VR based Physiotherapy

Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject Summary

The most recent technology incorporated in physical therapy is Virtual Reality (VR). A virtual environment is created to help patients suffering from pain and injury relearn the use of their limbs in a way that is both encouraging and fun. This technique has been in use for some time now in the successful treatment of stroke victims, walking disorders as well as back pain. This has been shown to greatly improve the patient’s motor learning and coordination skills by enabling users to feel motivated when doing physical therapy.

In our proposed project, a virtual environment is created that helps in knee injury. A scene is created that simulates walking with the help of railings for the pateints who find it difficult to walk normally suffering from a knee injury. Using the VR headset, patients who are suffering their lower limbs injuries, are provided with an environment that appears as if they are taking a walk in a park or by the countryside. This ensures that they enjoy the activity, a factor that serves to greatly accelerate their treatment.

Physical therapy is a restorative care and treatment that is intended to relieve pain resulting from injury and help the patient recover movement and functions. Apart from the management of pain resulting from injury, physical therapy can help manage other health conditions such as chronic illnesses, recovery from birth, adaptation to artificial limbs, among other uses.

Physical therapy works for people of all ages and gender. The procedure is carried out by, or under the supervision of a trained professional.

Different techniques are used during therapy. Some of them include infrared radiation, laser therapy, massage and manual resistance training. Different equipment is also incorporated into the practice in accordance with the need. They could be electrical devices, heat, ultrasound or even stimulating the patient’s body manually using body contact. Swimming, use of chairs, exercise balls and even stairs have also been successfully applied to manage injury and promote recovery.

Playing games on VR has proven to be a great way to get patients to engage in their physical therapy exercises and treatments. All these technological advances have led to great improvements in the medical treatment and management of diseases and conditions that were previously thought to be unmanageable. And the more discoveries are made, the better and easier it will become.

Physical therapy is a very important health restorative procedure that while used, either in isolation or together with other treatment procedures, help manage many of the injuries and conditions that befall people. And, with the advancements in the VR technology, physical therapy has now become an engaging, fun and thrilling experience. In our proposed project, a virtual scene is simulated that motivates knee injury patients to walk alongside the rails inside their own home and there is a little need to go to hospitals.

Project Objectives

The main objectives are as following.

Project Implementation Method

This project has been divided into hardware and software phases in the development stages. For hardware section, initially smart glasses are used to creat the virtual environment. For the software development, deep learning algorithms are used to create railings and stairs and embedding of virtual scenes with real background.

Benefits of the Project

Virtual or Augumented reality is gaining a place in our society and reshaping our technological scene. Our initial step is to creat virtual environment that helps people suffering from the knee injury to faciiltate in their rehabitalition. Using VR glasses, pateints will be able to experience real support that is needed to help them walk again.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

VR devices are gaining a place in our society and reshaping our technological scene. Accordingly, CNNs are being connected broadly in profound learning, and they speak to the most well-known model design connected by a great many people. Vision and object learning will be based on deep learning algorithm. Deep learning features will be used to recognize multiple obstacles. Finally, smart glasses will be equipped with camera and AI software to creat virtual scenes.

The initial step is of our project to make a device that will model different objects in a scence. In long term perspective, virtual eyes can be made in future. VR glasses using HD camera will scan nearby objects. Initially all indoor objects will be created and later they will be embedded with cross rail;ings and stairs. To acquire different question acknowledgment deliberately, a profound learning strategy is actualized to naturally learn and separate component esteems, radically shortening the extraction time of protest highlights. For scene acknowledgment, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are the best among all present profound learning structures. CNNs have the upsides of diminishing picture clamor, expanding signal highlights, and streamlining neural systems. A deep convolutional network is used for it which is first trained in a fully supervised setting using state of art method. We will then extract various features from this network, and evaluate the desired result for these features on generic vision. Using deep learning algorithms, virtual scenes are simulated that embed real objects and provide a real environment for physicaly disabled people to walk.
