Voltage Control of DFIG at Variable Wind Speed
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThis Project presents the working of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) using Power Electronic Converters at rotor side terminal of induction generator. The rotor of DFIG is rotated with the wind turbine at variable wind speed. The stator side of DFIG produce 3 phase power output. The rotor side terminals are connected with the grid by 2 converters which compensate the distortion in output produced by the variable wind speed. A control system generates an error signal by comparing reference voltages and measured voltages at stator side and feed that signal to the converters, converters feed the required frequency to compensate the distortion. This project is tested under two conditions, DFIG running at synchronous speed and sub synchronous speed.
Project ObjectivesMain objective of this project is to produce stable output which was not stable because of the variable nature of wind. We had to design converters to achieve our objective.
Project Implementation MethodDue to the environmental condition of our region we used a DC Shunt motor which acted like a variable Wind source by varying DC supply. Rotor of the DC Shunt motor is then coupled with the rotor of DFIG. Our converters will then connect with rotor terminals of the DFIG.
Benefits of the ProjectTo Avoid Carbon emissions, world is now Shifting towards renewable energy resources, so firstly it’s a renewable energy source and it will be beneficial for environment
Secondly, in conventional wind energy conversion systems we have to provide the converter whose rating matches with the output power, but in DFIG, converters rating reduces approximately 30% of the output power.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableTo successfully model and design converters and a control system required to achieve stable AC voltage at stator output, even at variable RPM due to variable wind speed
