Utility Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryThe basic idea is to develop an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that can be programmed in a manner that does not require a human pilot to go from one position to another. The project will be comprised of both hardware and software. This autonomous system will be developed using an F550 Hexa frame. We will also use the autopilot module APM 2.8, PPM Module with 6-channel RC-controller. The positions to which it had to travel will be programmed in the controller before the flight through GPS. We will also use Mission Planner software that will work as our On-Ground station to control the movement of UAV. The main objective of our project is to develop a UAV that can be used for medical purposes such as for carrying medicines, First Aid Kits, and in the transportation of Blood to distant or unreachable areas.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of our project is to develop a UAV that can be used for medical purposes such as for carrying medicines, First Aid Kits, and in the transportation of Blood to distant or unreachable areas.
Project Implementation MethodProject Implementation Method:
- The initial step in implementation of the project will include the assembling of hexa frame followed by fittings of motors, propellers and all the related sensors and other components as mentioned in technical details.
- Then, after the initial step, it will be ensured that the hexacopter makes a proper flight with and without the autopilot. Upon successful flight, it will then be tested with payload with minimum weight attached to the copter’s belly. The weight shall increase gradually to the limit of up to 500g.
- The next step will be the adjustment of autopilot module AMP 2.8 and then testing it with different components such as its power supply and servo motors before being fitted into the drone.
- Each module shall have two major inspections, one before fitting and one after it. Simulations shall be made before any test flight. Each module’s working shall be inspected on the ground and in the air during a test flight. Changes are expected to be made after each test flights.
- If an motor or propeller is damaged, a hexacopter is able to fly and land safely even with 5 rotors
- 6 rotors for a more stable flight behavior
- Flying even at high wind speeds
- Higher load capacity
- It shortens the time to reach the destination. For example: it reaches inaccessible places because of floods or blocked roads
- Greater acceptance by authorities for a start-permission
The main part of the project will be based on Hardware. The hexacopter will be developed using F550 Hexa frame with A2212/6t brushless 1100 KV motors with 10-inch propellers on it attached to all 6 rotors of the frame. Other components included are SimonK 30A ESC for controlling speed and APM 2.8 which is a complete open source autopilot system.
The installation and calibration of sensors will be done by installation of Dx-6 6 Channel RC Controller which is a radio controller designed primarily for RC aircraft with a PPM module. A 5200mAh, 12V battery with a DLC charger. A 915Hz telemetry for retrieving information, NEO 7m GPS for positioning and a Power distribution Board (On the Chassis).
The software part of the project includes Mission Planner which will work as an On-Ground station for controlling the hexacopter. This software is only compatible with Windows operating system.
Final deliverable of the project:
- Development of Hexacopter.
- PID Tuning for stable flight of Hexacopter
- Installation and Calibration of sensors.
- Hexacopter will be able to carry a payload up to 500g.
- Setup of an on-ground control station for remote handling of the UAV.
