Project Summary

Underwater optical wireless system provides an awareness of data transmission to the martial, industries or business and technical communal. Underwater system plays an significant role in researches and control and monitoring investigation include change of climate monitoring, maintenance and monitoring of pollution, environmental changes in sea and lake, boats, floats and ocean research. We need to installed number of vehicles in underwater to implement our desired activity. For transfer of data in underwater we required efficient unnamed devices having higher capacity as well as bandwidth. Interest towards underwater optical wireless communication has extensively increased, Free space optical communications and satellite communications based on laser uses optical wavelengths for protected transmission of data, working mechanism of these two techniques is most similar to UOWC. We can achieved higher data rates when we used appropriate wavelengths. Over reasonable ranges broadband transmission can achieved. Underwater wireless communication and sensor networks qualifying the large interest which increases the prerequisite for monitoring and observing the subsea system. Though, acoustic communication is the contemporary technology and can’t afford higher data rates to control and monitor the environmental services, for this drawback of acoustic communication and fulfil our required services and investigations optical wireless communication proposed to vanish our challenges because optical communication offer higher data rates for effective transmission of data and fulfil the services or challenges which required the higher data rates. For optical wireless links three types of models are presented, one is line of sight link second is modifying link and the third is reflective link all these models provides our mandatory data rate, we can also identify link performance on the basis of models. After the analysis on three links, it shows that when absorption increases in water its ultimately decreases the performance. Though, we can possibly decrease by the use of scatter light. The core motivation of optical links for underwater communication is to recognize the consistency and probability of high data rate that the transmission of data in various propagation whether affect the performance of system or not. Optic communication system presented a method that balance the acoustic system as well as provide high data rate, energy efficient and low delay. It is concluded that underwater optical network is an achievable idea for challenging applications like links, sensors and networks, and because of multi-hop idea UOWC can achieved protracted ranges .

Project Objectives

There are three objective of this project which are as follows;

i. Establishing communication between optical transmitter and receiver and operate it in different mediums (namely, free space and underwater) to analyze performance of laser in different PH valued water.

ii. Analyze the effect of encoding technique for established optical transmitter and receiver.

iii. Measure the conductivity of pure and impure water.

Project Implementation Method

Structure of UOWC consist of transmitter and receiver that produce data to convey from one source after that modulated on optical channel so that it can travel longer distances with great amount of data rate. Source is facilitate by laser beam in order to pass indication towards receiver. By this way, laser beam projected towards receiver through medium of underwater vision which is vary according to location and time. If we talk about receiving site, it collects laser beam which is transmitted by transmitter and then receiver conveys beam to detector afterwards which is transferred from optical energy to electrical energy. Electrical energy is then permits to go through signal processing unit and there is a demodulator for recapturing original signal.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits  of UOWC system are aquanaut-aquanaut communication, driver-tosea, maritime-to-autonomous vehicles, undersea-to-satellite these are the links which are used in the future, planned investigation, contamination observing, oil preservation and regulators, offshore surveys, environment modification checking and oceanography explorations. We can also improve future development by various implementations include we have to analyze our systems and if any error then we should improve it, build an efficient platforms for transmissions, implement higher frequency amplifiers in receiver side, for underwater we should enhance our hardware efficiency and functionalities and also improve software modulation and demodulation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

For any communication system the priority is to design an initial stage system which provides simple but effective as well as relevant results. Based on these results the entire communication system could be designed.System comprises of three main components that are Transmitter, Receiver, and a medium.

The transmitter that is used in this wireless optical communication system is based on LASER module KY-008. This module works as a transmitter in this communication system with the help of  microcontroller.

Receiver end is like the transmitter end. It also has a laser component which works as demodulator for a light signal. This receiver chip has a photodetector which has a function that is to convert an optical signal into an electrical signal, it gives an outcome in the form of glowing LASER light. This laser module is designed to capture the emitting red doted light from transmitter and interpret this optical signal into an electrical signal.

As its name it is an optical based wireless system which is designed for underwater communication, so water is a medium of communication.
