Since the Outbreak of Corona Virus, Many places have adopted the procedure of measuring body temperature of the individuals entering the premises. This is signficanct when it comes to isolating potential COVID patients from the unaffected individuals. Our Institute has also adopted this procedure. However, This is manually proceeded which causes room for many errors, some of them may be lethal. Our Project uses RFID for identification of the indivduals. A smart contactless card is tapped infront of the reader, which sends the identification of the respective individuals. Next step is to take their body temperature which is accomplished by a temperature sensor. The data retrived is send to the microcontroller which compares and stores the data, while also displaying the necessary data and prompting other required message. All the data is stored in the form of a database and can be viewed when deemed necessary. This method changes the convention of taking body temperature manually and makes it more accurately.

Project Implementation Method

To implement our project, we shall integrate all the sensors and/or modules to a microcontroller. The sensors/module shall retrive the data we require and microcontroller (as programmed) shall process that respective data collected and based on the data make decisions that we desire. We can implement the device in the form of a gate. This is to ensure that any indivduals entering the premise of our institute shall be monitered. We can also place the device at the entrance so that similar goal can be accomplished. Nonetheless, Both procedures shall result in our desired accomlishment.

Benefits of the Project

Since the outbreak of COVID, The situation of the whole world has changed. Waves of COVID have destroyed families and affected millions. One of the conventional way of identifing potential COVID patients is the measurement of their body temperature. This is not very effective procedure but one that is implemented as a basic measure to reduce COVID spread. Our project would be able to isolate potential COVID patients from the unaffected individuals. This measure is significant since we can reduce the spread of COVID even if not to a very large scale, but to that it can be a change that is required in these times.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Firstly, RFID either UHF or HF of the category, is used for identification. The SPI/HSU communication protocol is used to interface RFID Reader with the microcontroller. Next, The smart contactless RFID cards shall be used depending on the respective RFID category. Secondly, The temperature sensor used is the Melexis MLX90614, The company which manufactures one of the best temperature sensors, It shall be used to measure accurate body temperature. The communication protocol used to interface the temperature sensor with the microcontroller is I2C. Analog Distance sensor is utilized to ensure the individual is in the range for the sensor to output accurate measurement. For the microcontroller, We are using both Arduino UNO and MEGA. The reason for using arduino and not a powerful computer such that as Raspberry Pi is that we are implementing a total of 5-7 hardware which includes sensors and/or modules. Integration of these sensor with a Raspberry Pi is a complex task and we preffered Arduino due to its simplicity in the hardware and robustness. If our project was purely software based then Raspberry Pi would be our only choice. To display the data, we would integrate a 64X32 Dot Matrix LCD panel with Arduino MEGA since the limitation of UNO due to its limited RAM. Our final expected result is the integration of all the sensors/modules to the microcontroller(s). Lastly, We shall implement this device on the front gate of our institute as to prompt ever individual to tap their smart contactless cards infront of the RFID Reader. The RFID Reader would be situated at side of the gate so that the card can be tapped easily. The temperature sensor would be placed slightly above middle of that of the gate. This is to ensure the area/zone (the side of the forehead or lower face) from where the temperature has to be measured is easily accessible (being in sensors field of view) and/or in the range of the temperature sensor. The structure may be varied depending on the success of accurate data collection (In our case, The RFID Reader with the smart contactless cards and Temperature sensor accounting for different height of the individuals).
