Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryLiquid dielectrics serve the purpose of insulation in major high voltage applications such as transformers, high voltage switchgears, reactors, capacitors and cables etc. For reliable operation of high voltage devices, it becomes necessary to regularly check the strength of the liquid dielectric as it determines whether the liquid dielectric is safe to use in the device of a certain voltage rating. By means of our breakdown voltage tester kit the above-mentioned purpose of maintenance checks is served. A sample of liquid dielectric is collected and placed in a container having two electrodes immersed in the liquid. Constantly increasing high potential is applied across the electrodes until the breakdown spark occurs. The protection circuit breaks the supply path and the voltage reached is termed as the breakdown voltage of the liquid.
Existing Kits in the Market:
Modern Breakdown Voltage Tester Kits that are already being manufactured and utilized throughout the world such as OTS AF models (By Megger) and OLT models (By KEP) nclude features such as automatic testing up to voltages ranging from 50kV to 100kV, compatibility with IEC 60156 and ASTM D1816 standards, electrode distance adjustment/electrode replacement, circuit breaking time on breakdown less than 10 milliseconds, magnetic liquid stirrer, real time temperature measurement, test result printer and result data internal storage etc. Prices of these kits starting from PKR. 11 Lacs (excluding imoport charges)

Project Objectives- To determine breakdown voltage of liquid insulators which is essential during regular maintenance checks of the liquid dielectrics used in high voltage devices to ensure safety of the device from detrimental short circuit failures.
- To perform/test simulation for electric field visualization on COMSOL Multiphysics software.
- To ensure safe operation of transformers in our power systems.
- To develop an inexpensive device for testing and demonstration purposes
For the purpose of testing the breakdown voltage of the insulating oil the voltage needs to be increased at a constant rate and applied at the electrodes immersed in the oil and when the breakdown occurs the circuit should break and the voltage at that instant should be noted. The step by step process designed for the achievement of this purpose is shown below:
