They are uncapable of identifying objects that they encounter in their walking paths. Due to this, there is a huge chance of collision and accident while walking and travelling. Technology is making our life easier. Our approach is to use this technology to help those who are in need. The proposed project entitled “Third eye for blind – The smart cap” will help the blind and vision-impaired people to identify the objects and distance between the person and an upcoming object. The smart cap will speak out loud any object that comes in a path of blind person along with the distance information of how far the object is. This cap will also help the blinds in text recognition for reading of newspapers and books. This system will provide independence to bind and vision-impaired persons through which they may walk anywhere at any time.
Without eyes humans are incomplete. There mobility is affected due to disabilities. As a result the independence is affected. Due to this, the blind people are in constant need for someone to help them. Many accidents has happened due to vision impairment or low vision.
They can detect objects only by sense of touch. Along with, they cannot read simple books and newspapers like a normal person do.
In this technology driven era, it is important to adopt the approaches where technology should be used to aid the people who requires it. Due to this our adopted approach will benefit the blind in many ways.
The objectives include:
- Object detection, identification and report: The system will detect the object, along with the label and distance of object with person. Than, it will report the person through voice message.
- Text to voice : The system will help blind to read books, newspapers and any related text by converting targeted text into voice.
- Location tracking: System will inform the blind about the location verbally whenever he/she will ask.
- Find the path : The system will help blinds by informing them about any obstacle (such as wall), so blind may easily find the way to move forward.
- Help blind in understanding his/her surroundings: The system will detect the all objects of that area, then convert it into a voice for the blind. This will help blind to be acquainted with the surroundings
For implementation of this project following equippments and aplication programming interfaces (API) are required.
- Raspberry Pi to run algorithms and fast image processing
- Trainded object detection ssd and tensorFlow model
- Pi Camera for real time images and video
- Espeak and google API to speak about detected objects.
- Headphones for voice output
- ultrasonic sensor for detecting any dig in front of blind so that depth could be measured as for stairs too.
This system is for blind and vision-impaired persons it will help them to walk without someone`s help so that they could become independant even they don't need any stick to have with them all the time. they can easily get informed about their family members around them they can also read books.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final deliverable of the project is a smart cap (a wearable device) that will act as a third eye for the blind. The cap will act as an object detector, identifier, text reader, location communicator and help users to be acquainted with their surroundings.
