Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryWe are designing variable frequency drive for controling speed of single phase induction motor. Our
design is based upon the previously tested version of VFD for three phase induction motor with some
modifications. The existing single phase VFD can't work with single phase induction motor due to
capacitor attached to the motor. We are going to remove that capacitor. We are creating phase shift for
driving the motor through our VFD.
The objective of our project is to control the speed of single phase induction motor upto 0.5 horsepower.
Project Implementation MethodAC source voltage is converted into DC voltage and supplied to inverter circuit. The inverter circuit
consists of 2 H-bridges. One H-bridge energize main winding with 0 degree phase and other H-bridge
energize auxiliary winding with 90 degree phase shift for proper functioning of single phase induction
motor. H-bridges consists of MOSFETs which are controlled by controller.

Final deliverable is VFD which controls the speed of single phase induction motor. The frequency ranges
from 10-50Hz in the multiples of 10.
