Smart Water Meter Infrastructure Using IoT
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThe world is increasingly looking forward to adaptation and use of new technologies to improve quality of life. Availability of clean water for increasing population and urbanization is becoming serious problem day by day. The traditional ways of manual water meter reading is inconvenient, time consuming and incorporate many errors.
Smart water meter infrastructure is designed using Long Range (LoRa) technology, which uses license free radio frequency band and enables low data rate, ultra-low power and long-range communication for IoT applications. It measures daily water consumption and communicates that information in an automated fashion to the cloud through LoRa technology. It provides instant access of water usage for monitoring and billing purposes to both consumers and water utilities. Our system relies on the use of Internet of Things (IoT) approach for real time water metering and cloud based analytics. Once data is on the cloud, it is accessible to the user interface in the raw form as well as in the graphs. The consumer can access information regarding time and amount of water used on the smartphone application. Accurate billing is performed based on real time water consumption, which will keep the users mindful of their water consumption at the same time they will also be alerted to abnormal water usage to reduce water loss.
Project ObjectivesThe purpose of our project is to propose solutions related to smart water metering.
•Motivates to save water resources
•Two way communication
•Remote meter reading capability
•Accurate and time stamped data collection
•Detects leakages
•Saves money
•Provides accurate billing
•Provide web interface for the users
Project Implementation MethodSmart Water Meter has a water flow sensor that operates on working flow rate in Litre/sec of the water flowing through the pipe. After that the total volume consumption is being calculated. All these values are displayed on the OLED display so that users can be able to view them. The total water consumtion is communicated to the water utility office through Long Range Low Power LoRa Technology to the water utility office about 2 to 3 km from the consumer house. Water Utility gets a deep insight of the user's water consumption.and billing is also generated.
On the other hand we also provide a web interface in the form of a webpage so that users can login by using their credentials and view their water consumption stats.
Benefits of the ProjectFollowing are the expected benefits of the smart water meter:
•Motivates to save water resources
•Two way communication
•Remote meter reading capability
•Accurate and time stamped data collection
•Detects leakages
•Saves money
•Provides accurate billing
•Provide web interface for the users
Technical Details of Final Deliverable•Display flow rate in L/sec
•Indicates total volume consumption in Liters
•Communicate total volume consumption to water utility office using LoRa (Long Lange) technology
•Publish data to the cloud
•Compare total volume consumption with the threshold
•Controls the operation of the valve
