Smart Waste Segregation And Compaction Using IOT
Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject SummaryWith the advent of contemporary science and technology, computer engineering is advancing at a rapid pace. We need to clean our environment with current technology since it reduces labor effort while also providing a healthy and affluent atmosphere. As a result, to better comprehend the technology and the value of nature, we aim to fabricate a smart management system by implementing the concept of smart bins. As we all know, trash is one of the largest issues faced by the modern world, considering the limited living space on Earth and an exponential rise in population, every year. The fast development in urbanization and population has resulted in the collection of massive volumes of unwanted trash all over the world, which has become a severe problem that needs efficient management and recycling. A smart bin is a tiny effort to shape a smart city without the amalgam of different type of toxic wastes that is widespread throughout the city and would ultimately be cost-efficient along with creating a healthy environment. The goal of this project is to create one of these waste management systems on a smaller scale using existing technology and attempting to keep costs as low as feasible.
Project Objectives- Garbage Segregation.
Most Developing Countries don’t have any organized means of controlling solid waste that widespread on roads, streets, and parks etc and face problem in disposing the waste. The clusters of solid waste had been having a detrimental effect on our planet for decades since it takes centuries to decompose if not recycled. In order to recycle the waste material, it must be sorted and separated from one another. Thus, one of our main objectives is to segregation of garbage so that it could be recycled effortlessly, and a clean, sustainable, and healthy environment can be achieved to live a quality life.
- Garbage compaction.
Every day the trash bin quickly gets full and eventually results in overflowing of the garbage that also results in the polluting the environment. Thus, our second objective is to compact the segregated garbage whenever the bin gets full so that the bin does not needs to be replaced or emptied persistently but once in a while.
- Garbage feasible Handling.
After segregation and compaction, our project also offers the feasible handling of the segregated and compacted garbage so that it can easily be grasped and managed while emptying the bin.
Project Implementation Method| To segregate plastic and other waste material we will use Image processing to detect the plastic and other waste material. Thus, an image data set containing 600 images of plastic and 1100 images of other waste material will be used. The dataset will be trained through teachable machine using CNN algorithm. Then Raspberry Pie is used to control the components like servo motors, camera, micro bit BBC, bit board, IR sensor, light etc. As the camera captures the image of the trash thrown in the bin, the image is then sent to raspberry pie (which has been coded in mini python) that matches the received image with the trained dataset. After the image is detected as plastic or as other waste material, the information is conveyed to servo motor. Here two servo motors are used one for controlling plastic trash and one to control other waste material, and these two servo motors are connected to raspberry pie using 2 pins. If the image is detected as plastic is thrown in one bin and if it is detected as other waste material, it is thrown in another bin since the project consist of two bins segregating plastic and other waste material. when bin gets full, it is detected by IR sensor which send the signal to the compressor, and it compresses the trash in bin using syringe compressing technique. |

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the latest version of the low-cost Raspberry Pi computer. The Pi isn't like your typical device; in its cheapest form it doesn't have a case and is simply a credit-card-sized electronic board -- of the type you might find inside a PC or laptop, but much smaller. Through the raspberry pie, we control our sensor, motors light, etc.
Micro: bit BBC Micro: bit boardThe BBC micro: bit is a pocket-sized codable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass, and Bluetooth technology. It detects the motion of the hand when a person through the garbage in the bin.
Micro-servo Motor (SG90 / MG90)G90S is a micro servo motor with metal gear. This small and lightweight servo comes with high output power, thus ideal for RC Airplane, Quadcopter, or Robotic Arms.
CameraA camera is an optical instrument that captures a visual image. At a basic level, cameras consist of sealed boxes, with a small hole that allows light through to capture an image on a light-sensitive surface. The camera machine captures the image and compares the training dataset and classifies garbage on that basis.
IR SensorAn infrared sensor (IR sensor) is a radiation-sensitive optoelectronic component with spectral sensitivity in the infrared wavelength range 780 nm … 50 µm. In our project IR sensor was used for compaction. When Bin is full the IR sensor sends the signal to the microcontroller and the microcontroller sends the signal to the compactor then the compactor compresses the bin Garbage.
CompactorA compactor is a machine or mechanism used to reduce the size of material such as waste material or biomass through compaction. A trash compactor is often used by a home or business to reduce the volume of trash it produces. IT reduces garbage size and help to make a healthy environment.
Basically, we are providing a workable smart bin model which help to reduce pollution, reduce labor cost, provide healthy life.
