A large number of vehicles are causing slower speed which increases the trip time and increases the fuel consumption. When vehicles increase then the capacity of the road it may cause traffic congestion. In metropolitan areas of Pakistan like Lahore, traffic congestion is a big issue. So, accidents and sudden brakes of cars in the flow of heavy traffic are causing traffic jams due to congestion of traffic. According to the statistics of 2017, there are 46.9 million annual losses due to congestion in Pakistan. Traffic congestion is a part of pollution. Failure of signals, poor law enforcement, and bad traffic management have led to traffic congestion. So, to decrease congestion, pollution, fuel consumption, and trip time I feel the need to develop a smart traffic management system. We need to control all these issues. And the best solution to come out this issue is a “smart traffic management system”. We can control the flow of traffic on the roads with the “smart traffic management system”.

Project Objectives

The following objectives of the “smart traffic management system” project.
 

Detection and management of traffic congestion:

The main objective of this project is to control the congestion on roads. And I think we can manage this with the smart traffic lights. Smart traffic lights will be artificially intelligent. It can decide which road side has more traffic or special vehicle and which signal should be green.

Auto billing of core areas:

As we know that every vehicle driver has to pay while crossing certain interstate expressways, tunnels, bridges, and other national and state highways in terms of toll tax. For collecting toll tax there is a toll plaza and we see there are long lines of vehicles to pay toll tax. So, auto billing or auto toll tax collection may reduce traffic congestion.

Priority for special vehicles:

As we know that there are no special roads for special vehicles like ambulances, bank cars, or firefighting cars. So, we can detect the special vehicle on road and we can make the signals green on a priority basis.

Project Implementation Method

RFID Controller:

The RFID controller consists of an RFID interrogator. This interrogator is used for communication with the RFID tag. The RFID controller then gets the signals/data received by the interrogator

RFID Tag:

RFID tags are wireless devices that make use of radio frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data, which is used for identifying and tracking objects.

Infrared Sensors:

Infrared sensors are used to detect energy emitted from vehicles. The energy captured by these infrared sensors is focused onto an infrared sensitive material using an optical system which then converts the energy into the electric signals. Infrared sensors are used for the signal.

By using a radio frequency identification system and IR sensors we can communicate with cars (Vehicles) and signals which will be helpful to control the flow of traffic.

Following are the benefits of this project

The most important is to serve the community. Everyone is frustrated due to the congestion on roads and traffic congestion also causes pollution. Hence this project will be beneficial for our community.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A server can be maintained which can receive certain crucial data calculated by the Controller of the signals. The main aim is to implement a system that would trace the travel time of individual cars as they pass the roadside controllers and compute an average trip time using a rule-based system to decide whether the area is congested or uncongested.

We can use this technique to calculate the speed of a motorist and to detect if he violates the prescribed/set speed limit.

Automatic toll collection and automatic core area charge collections are also done using the same framework. The Controller unit will be placed at the toll booth and along the motorable roads around the core area which will detect each vehicle uniquely.
