Street lighting is one of the important parts of city’s infrastructure where the main function is to light up the city’s streets during dark hours of the day. There are many factors that need to be considered in designing a street lighting system such as the safety of community members and road users, provide public lighting at reduced electric consumption. We will develop a Smart Street Light System which is an advanced automated system that is designed to boost the efficiency and accuracy by automatically switching the street lights on/off.

The system mainly consist of an Arduino connected with different sensors (LDR, IR and Current Sensor) to monitor and control the street lights. A solar panel is being used as a power supply back up in case of power shutdown. In addition, solar panel is connected to generate power and is stored in batteries.

IR sensor is use for motion detection and when motion is detected the lights will be brighten. All our lights are linked together so when motion is detected by one light it sends a signal to its adjacent lights so they also become bright. The street lights can be monitored and controlled by using the web portal. The web portal provides the analysis of power consumption as well as fault detection.

The system is designed in such a way that it automatically detects the intensity of lights and if it is dark the lights are automatically turned on. This is done by using LDR sensor. Further as our system main objective is to reduce energy consumption, so all the lights are dimmed when there is no movement of object.

The main outcome of this project is reduction of power consumption and fault monitoring and by doing so not only we will be saving electricity but also saving money spent on electricity. The application of this project is not only limited to street lights and the power saved here could be used in more important places like hospitals , fire hydrants , schools and places of worship.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

Software Process model provides a blueprint for our project by defining the distinct set of activities, actions, tasks and milestones. A good process model plays an important role in the success of any project.

After a thorough analysis of different Software Process Model. Prototyping model was considered as a better choice for our proposal work. It provides the perfect platform for our project by creating a functional prototype of the proposed system while reducing risks involved in other models. The goal is to reduce risk and limit costs by increasing understanding of proposed system before committing more resources.

  1. Requirements gathering and analysis:

We begin with requirement analysis and defined the system requirement in detail. Further survey of various potential users was carried out to know the requirement of the system.

  1. Quick design:

We create a preliminary design for the system which will give an idea of the system to the user. We have created an ERD, Use-Cases and a block diagram which will show a preliminary design of the system. Initial design of the web portal is also created to show how the dashboard for monitoring and fault detection will look like.

  1. Build Prototype:

The information we have gathered from quick design is used to create the first prototype, which represents the working model of the system.

  1. User evaluation:

Once the proposed system is designed for the user for thorough evaluation of the validation prototype and the comments and suggestions that user is providing is taken in consideration.

  1. Refining Prototype:

Once the user evaluates the prototype and if they are not satisfied, the current prototype is refined according to the requirements. We will continue this process until all the requirements specified by the user are met.

  1. Engineer product:

Once the requirements are completely met, the user will accept the final prototype then the system will be evaluated thoroughly to prevent large-scale failures. Over all system block model is shown in the following figure:

The main benefits of the project are low power consumption and it will also lower the cost of electricity used by the street lights.

Another benefit is live monitoring of street lights with fault detection. We can also monitor the voltage used by each street light.

The project is also generating energy with the help of solar, so when there is a power shortage.

The direct beneficiary of this project is the government as they will be saving huge amounts of money on electricity.

Indirect beneficiary are the people of the country as there will be more electricity for people to use and hopefully there will be less power shortages

        •  For detection of day or night time an LDR sensor is  being used.
