Project Summary

Most often the bike riders ignore wearing helmet without any reason. Therefore, people die in the road accident, but their relatives have no knowledge of the accident. Moreover, over speeding, driving carelessly, drink and drive practice, lack of experience or focus, not having ability to drive, problematic vehicles, road rash, and violation of traffic rules leads to accidents, have become common issues. It is the responsibility of the State as well as the citizens, with the help of technological advancements, make ensure that road regulations are obeyed, issues described above are ignored and their impact is reduced. The perception of producing smart safety helmet using IOT comes from our responsibility towards our society. In many cases of accident that occur, there is a huge loss of health, wealth, and life. Many individuals die on roads every annual year in bike accidents and their families are even not aware of the accident. But the main problem was not wearing helmet by the person which cause instant death through brain damage. so, it is important that there should be a solution to reduce the aftereffects of these accidents. therefore, feeling our responsibility, by this work we tried for the biker to put a helmet on his head during the ride, to stop drive and drink practice, speeding and road rash by bikers and give medical attention when the accident happens by alerting the person who is concerned who will give suggestions to other important issues after collision. However, door is always open for the researchers to come forward and make efforts for reducing the ratio of accidents on roads.

      • Motorcycle is the most used vehicle in Pakistan.
      • Deaths due to the road accidents are very high in Pakistan.
      • Motorcycle is the most common choice of transport, but it has a very high contribution to road accidents injuries and casualties.
      • People avoid using helmet despite of the traffic rules and regulations.
      • Fast and intentional nature of people can be a reason for avoiding using helmet
      • People also ride under the influence of Drug or related compounds like
      • The system proposed is an effort to promote awareness in our society to use helmet and save people.

This FYP Implementation proposes the creation of smart safety helmet for Drug detection, accidents, and riding without helmet

Project Objectives

The objective of this system is to develop a SMART SAFETY HELMET for the security of bike rider, prevent drink and drive practices, prevent over speeding, develop an android application to monitor bike rider, detect accidents and send alert SMS to the concerned person with the location details, informing him about the accident who may take steps resolving the issues after accidents.

There are three main issues that motivated us to make this project:

  1. To check if the rider wears the helmet or not if the rider wear helmet only then the ignition of the bike will initiate otherwise it will remain turned off in this purpose Push Button will be used in the smart safety helmet,
  2. Second task is to check if the rider is in influence of Drug or not for this purpose Drug sensor will be used which senses the breath of the rider to check whether he has consumed Drug or not if the biker is in Drug consumption then the bike ignition will not initiate and start. And message will be sent to the number which we will set in the microcontroller that the rider has consumed Drug. For this purpose, MQ3 sensor will be used in the helmet.
  3. The third problem is of late medical help and accidents. If the biker encounters a collision and accident and does not get help on time he usually passes away and dies for this purpose accelerometer will be used in the bike so if the bike falls or gets stroke the accelerometer will be activated and sends message to the number saved in the microcontroller.

Project Implementation Method

There are three scenarios which define the working of the smart safety helmet in three ways.

  1. When rider wears the helmet

The Relay has the First priority for detection in case drug, accident, and its position through Falling situation the helmet Arduino detects the Reduction in resistance and generates bike on command that coordinates and is sent to the bike section Arduino Mega through the RF Transmitter and that Command is then Received from the RF Receiver and transfer it to the bike Arduino Nano which than starts the bike. And when the rider un wear the helmet the vice versa process happens, and the bike will be off

  1. When rider is in Drug consumption state

When the rider is in Drug consumption Drug sensor detects the Drug from his mouth and sends signal to the helmet Arduino about biker is in Drug. Then the bike Arduino does not send any signal to the bike Arduino about starting the bike

  1. When Accident occurs

When the accident occur two components work together the accelerometer detects that the bike has fallen, and the vibration sensor detects the change in the vibration which in turn both send data to the Arduino which then gather the GPS location of the bike using GPS module and send message to the authority by the GSM module.

Benefits of the Project

  1. Acident in rural areas can easily be identified and urgent emergency aid will be given as well as hospital escort will be provided
  2. It will also reduce the possibility of fatal accidents by not allowing Drug influential driving by Drug detection
  3. It will also reduce the possibility of people driving bike without of wearing helmet and playing with their lives.

The cost of the system is one of the biggest challenges. If the cost of the system will be height than the possibility of the purchasing will be low

  1. Accident detection Accuracy

Acceleration change is the indicator of accident but sometimes user brake or give sudden acceleration or accidently drop helmet so in this scenario it is the task of the system not to consider it as an accident.

  1. Battery Life

The Helmet should have a good battery life and should work all day. For this different hardware devices and algorithms will be used to maximize battery life.

  1. Force the rider to wear smart safety helmet
  2. Accident detection reliable
  3. Report accidents

Plot accident on the map to prevent future accidents and analyze the road construction fault.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Testing Phases of the smart safety helmet

These are the following type of testing which are done after the development of smart safety helmet

  1. Functionality testing
  • Smart safety helmet usage testing.

In this it is measure that the system can detect the rider head when he wears helmet This testing is done 30 times

  • Helmet strap lock testing

This is to measure that helmet strap is locking or not.

  • Internal components testing

In this testing each component connected to Arduino is tested to measure that helmet components are working or not

  • Communication testing

In this testing it is ensured that both helmet system and bike system are well connected

In this testing two-way messages are sent to check that each module should act as sender and receiver. This testing is done 30 times.

  1. Accuracy testing
  • Speed detection

In this the speed of the bike is measured by GPS speed reading.

  • Shock detection

This is done to measure how much shock the helmet can tolerate.

  1. Performance testing

In this the overall performance of the helmet is tested.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries from this FYP project will be everyone who will wear this helmet to obtain following functionalities

  1. Helmet head protection
  2. Drug detection
  3. Accident medical aid
