Smart Load Management from DISCO Side
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryDue to the energy shortfall there is a strong need to control the load management in a smart way. When there is shortage of energy, total power cuts and forced load-shedding conventionally create a total discomfort for residential consumers.
Instead of a total power cut of a small region, we need to limit the load of residential consumers of a large area, there should be a control based system to limit the connected load of a larger area from the distribution side which will result in better energy management. This will allow consumers to operate necessary loads during shortfall hours which in turn will help eliminate the discomfort of total power outage.
Our system is a real time and live system using IOT which is connected to the grid and for better energy management it will use AI based algorithms and make decisions on which time which load is disconnected and also check the consumer preferences.
Project ObjectivesOur aim is to get rid of load shedding at the cost of only less power use.
Our objective is to design a remote access load management control so that users can control their appliances even if the user is away from home.
AI based smart energy management.
Utilities have access to loads just according to the preferences set by the consumers.
Distribution companies can maintain a specific load on feeders.
IOT based remote access.
Project Implementation MethodFor the practical demonstration purpose of our project we have designed the following system. In this system both consumer end and distribution transformer will have separate circuits. Sensors will be used for current, voltage and power measurement of both consumer end and distribution transformer. All these measured values will be shown visually on GUI Graphical User Interface (GUI) designed for DISCO’s side.
We've set a power limit for consumers, and those who go over it during peak hours will have their electricity switched off after three warnings from the system by help of a buzzer, indicator LED and LCD Display. After every set interval of time the system will recheck consumers for power used. If power being used is still greater then defined power limit, the consumer will again be given 3 warnings before cutoff, if used power is within limit then power supply will remain on. During this process power status of every consumer will continuously be updated on GUI of DISTRIBUTION side.
Benefits of the ProjectLoad management allows utilities to reduce demand for electricity during peak usage times
When there is a shortfall, no need to turn off all the loads of the consumer's. Heavy loads are automatically turned off and light loads remain the same.
Energy distribution companies can use this solution in supply contracts.
The idea is to reduce bills, even if overall consumption remains the same.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe prototype product of FYP in the form of final deliverable will consist of a prototype which we will deliver to IESCO with friendly LCD and with the incorporation of IOT module.
