Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummarySmart home watering system to save water and plants using Arduino is IoT-based system (hardware and software). The system is significantly designed for home plants in order to increase monitoring and achieve maintainability in home plants with the help of wireless sensors. This system is made with the help of different sensors to collect data from plants field like humidity/ moisture level, water level (plants used water and water left in tank), temperature (temperature of soil and atmosphere), soil check (dry or wet) and weather forecast and display all these data on Android based application. App will generate alert messages to gardeners and household people. This IoT-based system will save lot of time and effort of the gardeners as Wireless sensor network is used for monitoring the field plants so when soil is dry, system is not on working, sprinkles not working, water motor not working or tank water is low so system will generate alarm (buzzer will on with red light) and send message through android application and it will also send message when system is stable. Data will be shown on lcd screen like motor is on/off, soil dry/wet, date and time. This IoT based technology minimizes the cost and increase the productivity.
Project ObjectivesSince nowadays, in the age of advanced technology and electronics, the life style of the human should be smart, simpler, easier and much more convenient. So, therefore there is a need for many automated systems in human’s daily life routine to reduce their daily activities and jobs. Here an idea of one such system named as smart home watering system to save water and plants is very useful. As many people are facing a lot of problem in watering the plants in the garden, especially when they away from the home. This model uses sensor technologies with microcontroller in order to make a smart switching device to help millions of people.
In its most basic form, system is programmed in such a way that soil moisture sensor which senses the moisture level from the plant at particular instance of time, if moisture level of the sensor is less than the specified value of threshold which is predefined according to the particular plant than the desired amount of water is supplied to plant till it’s moisture level reaches to the predefined threshold value. System involves humidity and temperature sensor which keep tracks the current atmosphere.
Project Implementation MethodFor the development of this System we use Arduino mega as a platform for IoT (Internet of Things). We create a network of different sensors like soil moisture sensor, water flow senor (used for water tank), water level sensor (used for plants), temperature sensor, Humidity sensor, weather forecast sensor and connect these sensors with a Arduino mega in which C programming language is used to detect the behavior of the sensors by generating data on android application. The Arduino mega is connected with a WIFI module which is further connected to a Smart phone to generate data on Android application and send alarm message on mobile. For the development of an android application we use Android studio as a framework.
Benefits of the ProjectThe Plants are an integral part of nature, and in the name of development, we already have sacrificed most of the green. This thought encourages me to do something productive for Mother Nature. I planned to make a smart home watering system to save water and plants. The plant watering system that I have designed is automated. It waters the plant when needed. To achieve this, I placed a water pump in a water reservoir and connected it to a microcontroller via a relay module. “Smart home watering system to save water and plants” is different and efficient approach as there is no such system which is helpful for the growth of plants and save water. All the deliverables of the project will overcome the multiple problems face by people about plants. It will give information about plants and overall system which can be helpful in many problems faced by people. “Smart home watering system to save water and plants”, is a platform for people who want to grow their plants easily without any difficulty and problem. Which can be helpful for environment and saving watering. Sadly in our society plants are not given importance because people have not time to give them properly water and they die, so this problem will also be solved via this system.
