A custom designed smart helmet which is integrated with our custom build mobile application that displays maps along with voice navigation. It also has the functionality of displaying the live speed of the motorcycle. All the information will be displayed in the form of augmented reality on the helmet visor such that the motorcyclist does not have to look down on his phone while safety is insured and road view is completely visible to the motorcyclist. Everything will be displayed on the helmet providing the motorcyclist ease in navigation and keeping in mind the safety measures of a helmet. The helmet will warn motorcyclist from motor vehicles coming near the bike as well as displaying visuals of the road and vehicles coming from behind with the help of a camera. The helmet will be able to stream live rear view to the motorcyclist as well as record the footage for surveillance or hit and run situations. Moreover, the user will be asked for emergency contact information which will help in informing the relatives of the motorcyclist as well as share location in case of an accident. Further it will collect travelling data of the user and display statistics of the journeys informing the rider about its fuel average and fuel range.

Project Implementation Method

Helmet Design:

The first approach to the helmet would be to design a custom helmet with the help of illustrating tools and then to get it fabricated. We will be designing it in a way that all the components are perfectly fitted and placed according to the best possible outcomes. The design will be kept minimal to avoid an unusual sized helmet which covers all the security and safety measures of a helmet.

Projection/Heads up display:

With the help of projectors, we will be producing heads up display on the helmet visor. The projectors will be placed on both sides of the helmet at a specific distance which provides the optimal size display so that the motorcyclist does not gets distracted. We will be using a special transparent material which doesn’t allow all lights to pass through to create heads up play without block any view.

METHODOLOGY:

SDLC:

The software end of our project will follow Software development life cycle which is a process followed for a software project development. It consists of a detailed plan describing how to develop, maintain, replace and alter or enhance specific software. The life cycle defines a methodology for improving the quality of software and the overall development process.

Phase 1 - Requirement Gathering

In this phase we gathered all relevant information needed to develop the application where we surveyed and interviewed people asking them for their opinions and suggestions regarding the functionalities of the helmet. After brain storming we finally came to a conclusion of all the possibilities of the project.                                                                                             

Phase 2 - App Design

In this phase we started with concept sketches and converted it to completed wireframes and illustrations for best possible user interface in a manner that it becomes user friendly interface. We researched different possibilities of heads up display in such a manner that the user is able to see the road clearly as well as view statistics and maps without being interrupted or without block any view of the rider.
 

Phase 3 - App Development

All programming and development will be completed during this phase. A minimum viable product will be ready upon completion of this phase which covers all the functionalities of the application including maps and voice navigation, speedometer, information regarding fuel average.
 

Phase 4 - App Integration with Hardware

In this phase we will integrate all the components of the hardware with our custom designed mobile application. All sensors and components will fetch data to our hardware module which will be integrated with our mobile application and display all feed to heads up display.

Benefits of the Project

There are a number of benefits of this project. It is mainly targeted to bike riders and the hailing services like careem & bykea which offer bike riding services. Most of them all have the same downside that they all have to look on their smartphones in order to follow navigation. This can be very dangerous since a vast number of people are using these services on daily basis and trusting them with their lives. According to a research, nearly 5000 bike accidents happen annually in Pakistan which is a huge number since most of the middle class population uses motorbike as their means of transport. With the help of our project, the number of accidents can eventually be decreased if the product comes in use on a good scale. It will warn riders from vehicles approaching the bike as well as display visuals of the road.

As we can see these days, most of the can’t keep a track of their bike mileage and fuel consumption of the bike. Our mobile app will help riders by displaying all their travelling history, speed, fuel average and fuel range so that they don’t run out of gas. It will also notify users when it’s time for bike maintenance.

In case of an accident, the helmet will detect that an accident has occurred and will automatically inform the concerned people or department for help, sending them the exact coordinates of the motorcyclist.

Another huge benefit that will be achieved from this product will be to tackle hit and run cases since all camera feed will be recorded which can help for surveillance purpose as well as providing evidence in case of a hit and run situation.

This project can also be optimized to benefit the government for their surveillance purposes if majority of the citizens use these helmets the government can monitor each and every on-going activity in every corner of the city through online portal where all live video stream can be uploaded.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A helmet equipped with microcomputers, sensors and projectors all in function. A mobile application which is integrated with the helmet which passes on the data to the projectors that display the live feed of everything on the visor. The mobile application will feature maps along with voice navigation. It also has the functionality of displaying the live speed of the motorcycle. Everything will be displayed on the helmet providing the motorcyclist ease in navigation and keeping in mind the safety measures of a helmet. It will warn motorcyclist from motor vehicles coming near the bike as well as displaying visuals of the road and vehicles coming from behind with the help of a camera. The helmet will be able to stream live rear view to the motorcyclist as well as record the footage for surveillance or hit and run situations. Moreover, the user will be asked for emergency contact information which will help in informing the relatives of the motorcyclist and as soon as an accident occurs, the helmet will automatically inform the emergency person listed.
