The pandemic is likely to stress the capacity of the public health system and result in the loss of human lives. The pandemic is moving like a wave one that may yet crash on those least able to cope. But COVID-19 is much more than a health crisis.

Secondly, Environmental Pollution is one of the major and serious threats nowadays. The environment in which we live greatly influences our health. The household, workplace, outdoor and indoor environments, etc all pose risks to health in a number of ways. With increasing industrialization and the congregation of most industries in already heavily industrialized areas, the problem of air pollution is being felt in our country. The presence in the air, beyond certain limits, of various pollutants discharged through industrial emissions and from certain human activities connected with traffic, heating, use of domestic fuels, refuses incineration, etc, has a detrimental effect on the health of the people.

Thus, covid-19 and air pollution are major issues affecting the well-being of people and economic development. Wearable healthcare devices with monitoring, treating, and protecting applications can provide reliable and newfangled interactive services for people.

So, the only way you can be safe is to wear a mask. The virus can enter through the mouth or nose and can cause a respiratory infection which can cause serious problems. It is very hard for an ordinary face mask to stop the virus from getting in the mouth or nose. The other problem is that if the person you are meeting has been infected from the virus, and you cannot just take a thermometer with you every time to check the temperature of the individual. The smart masks that are available in the market nowadays are very expensive. Secondly, there is difficult to breathe in most smart masks, the design of the proposed face mask would make it comfortable for users. Besides this virus, some people have di?culty in breathing in polluted areas, so they need something to breathe normally. The available masks are not equipped both for covid-19 and pollution. The proposed system will incorporate a smart face mask which includes measuring and recording gases in our surroundings such as CO2 gas detection, smoke detection, also measuring the body temperature of users will significantly diminish the danger of getting the Covid-19 which is right now a worldwide pandemic, also minimize the effect of polluted gases in our surroundings that are harming us.

Project Objectives

We are living in a time where there is a global pandemic. The main objective of this project is that everyone can inhale healthy air by wearing a smart mask to protect themselves from the covid-19 virus and other polluted gases in the air. Secondly, provide a cost-effective smart face mask. Mostly these kinds of masks are expensive, but we are focusing on a product that is cheap and reliable within the reach of everyone. This product is not limited to the pandemic covid-19 but also prevent air pollution.

Our project will mainly focus on the following objectives:

  1. To prevent the covid-19 virus.
  2. To prevent polluted gases in the environment.
  3. The system will be able to kill germs with the help of UV light.
  4. The User will be able to record and see all the measuring that sensors detect.
  5.  The system will monitor the temperature of the user and its vicinity. 

 The Android app for mask will be able to view results and make recommendations.

Project Implementation Method

The proposed project is divided into two parts. The hardware part and the software part. The hardware part consists of the sensors that take measurements of its environment. These sensors are connected to the Arduino that is used to bring these sensors to life. Arduino is a single-board microcontroller kit for building digital devices. It is connected to a battery. These sensors are then connected to their respective relay modules. On the software part. This whole setup is connected to a mobile app through Bluetooth. The coding for the app will be done in android studio which is the integrated development environment for Google’s Android operating system.

Benefits of the Project

The proposed system will greatly reduce the risk of inhaling the Covid-19 virus which is a pandemic nowadays. Not only this but the deadly gases in our surroundings which are injurious to our health, this mask can be used to protect from all sorts of environmental problems that will affect our internal health such as lung issues, breathing problems, etc. The system will be able to kill germs with the help of UV light. The users will be able to see the severity of different polluted gases in which they are living through the android mobile app and can take preventing measures accordingly. The android app also provides recommendations about the surrounding environment. Moreover, the proposed system provides the body temperature of the user.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of “Smart Face Mask” will be a mask with all functionalities implemented on it and also android based application along with a documentation manual having all technical details of both mask and application. The app will be developed in Java along with the Firebase database. The application will be compatible with android API version 21 and above. The functionality of the mask will be implemented on Arduino using Arduino IDE.
