Project Title

Smart Energy Meter

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

For the summary of our project, we focused on building a smart energy meter in order to advance electrical consumption practices and opportunities in Pakistan. For now we have successfully built a working model using the acs712 module for current measurement, a voltage transformer to measure voltage and an Arduino based processor to implement formulas to convert the voltage and current into power both active and reactive.

Our project has many diverse features such as having a Wi-Fi chip installed (esp8266) which enables two way communication of the device between both the consumer and the supplier. The data is also projected to be uploaded to a website (thingsBoard) in order to provide a visual interface for collecting data as well as data history along with statistics. The data being sent to the website is real-time and the project is designed to run both single phase and three phase systems. However, the project is still considered a model due to the 30A constraint of the acs712 chip and the lack of variable protective systems.

We also added a prepaid metering element to our project in order to curb the problem of electricity theft as well as defaulting/late bill payments. This helps to cut down on the electricity waste as well as provide people with exactly the amount of electricity that they need. This will also help locate electricity theft as the units being consumed by the user will be displayed to both the supplier and the consumer meaning that extra consumption of electricity will be immediately spotted and the fault/theft located.

Project Objectives

The main objective of our project is to provide the Pakistani populace with a reliable and helpful smart meter that will help them with their consumption practices as well as saving both them and the government of Pakistan money.
Secondary objectives of our project are as follows:
To make our project as accurate in its measurements as we can To make our project iot(internet of things) compatible and give it the provision to connect to the internet
To provide an administrator backed feature to cut off electrical supply if the consumer has no credit/is in violation of a rule
To provide realtime data accessible both on the website and on the consumers meter display that lets them know the present voltage/current/real power/active power/ reactive power and watts consumed
To provide a prepaid energy purchase feature

To complete our project and test it on a domestic household load

To improve this project for further industrial implementation

Project Implementation Method

For our project first of all we start the calibration of our PT's and CT's which are main components of our project. Calibration is a critical task so that's why we choose it first. Then after the calibration we start the code which is actually for different measurements like power energy consumption unit etc. After that we start the work on ESP8266 WiFi Chip for data communications. Then we start the work on website which actually give us the main platform for data communication.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits of this project are vast and far reaching. This project will help stop electricity theft and stealing as well as keep people posted on the amount of electricity they are consuming. The project is also an essential step in integrating our domestic and industrial users into the smart grids of the future that are slowly but surely replacing our outdated transmission structure. The project also gives consumers to buy the amount of the electric units they need and use them as they will.
Two way communication and transparency means less cases of corruption and wrong billing. The statistics gained by the collection of data provides the supplier a precise estimate of peak times, allowing them to use peak power plants more efficiently and successively reducing the cost of electricity.
The active and reactive power displays allow the indication of a fault or excessive reactive consumption. This is especially helpful for industrial consumers who are usually penalized for allowing their power factor to drop below a certain threshold. The provision of online metering means a lineman no longer has to regularly check the meters by hand, meaning less manpower required, thus meaning more money saved due to lesser amount of employees.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

For our project we use a Transformer 220v/12v and use a Current sensor ACS712 for Voltage and current measurement respectively. For data communication we use WiFi Chip ESP 8266 and for website we use thingsboard platform. And also it's a arduino based project.
