Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryEnergy is a very important aspect for any household, industries, agriculture, etc. Managing the energy efficiently and conserving it intelligently for home appliances is an important task. A smart house is a house that uses information technology to monitor the environment, control the electrical and electronic devices, automate simply daily tasks and communicates with the outer world wirelessly. The main objective of the proposed system is to ease and assist users in managing their homes without the need for their physical presence and most importantly to provide an affordable smart home system for monitoring the electrical energy consumption based upon real-time tracking of the devices. In this project, a smart house prototype will be built, that could monitor and control different home appliances through smartphone based on an android application. The proposed system works on real-time monitoring, so that the electrical devices and switches can be remotely controlled and monitored with android based app depending upon the energy consumption.
The outcome of the project aims at, saving on electricity in term of cost at the home level with an option of controlling the switching of the devices by simply using their Wi-Fi enabled smartphone. On the other hand, monitor the usage of energy of each device in real-time in order to reduce the electrical energy consumption. The devices mainly include all types of electronic equipment at home such as lighting, fans, heating equipment (heater or geyser), Refrigerator, Air-Conditioner etc.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of the proposed idea is
- To ease and assist consumers in managing their home energy consumption without the need of their physical presence
- To develop an android application that provides the integration with the smart home
- To develop a prototype home energy management system that could communicate with consumers through android app.
- To manage and reduce the electrical consumption of the consumer house.
- To enable the user to see their real-time energy consumption
The approach to implement the proposed project is as follows:
- The voltage and current sensors will take readings from appliances and will provide to the micro-controller
- The micro-controller will communicate data to an android app on smart phone to be displayed
- The power of each load will be displayed on android app
- The user could monitor and control the power consumption of each appliance in his/her android app
- In case of high energy consumption, the consumer can terminate its power supply via android app remotely
- The user will monitor and control the use of electricity via android app in accordance with the monthly setting for the unit consumed.
Smart homes (SHs) could play a crucial part in terms of demand response management (DRM) for a future smart grid (SG). The benefits of the proposed idea are to provide a flexible two-way monitor and control the energy consumption to the end-consumers. It can potentially persuade end-users to achieve energy-saving and cooperate with the electricity producer or supplier to maintain a balance between the electricity supply and demand through the method of peak shaving and valley filling. The proposed idea can be helpful for the new network design and development with respect to the SG. This idea can also play its role related to the security of the SG in terms of monitoring. Or end-user, it will be the ultimate beneficiary as this system will create convenience, and comfort, but also saves energy.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe detail of the final deliverable can be summarized as:
- A prototype model will be develop containing different loads and this platform is controlled by micro-controller.
- This micro-controller will communicate with the android app in terms of real-time information gathered from the model.
- Using the android app, the consumer can monitor and control the energy consumption.
- In return, the consumer can control the load by switching it on/off using the real-time clock and microcontroller.
- Actually, this two-way communication capability will be achieved using IoT.
