Project Summary

Smart Crops Monitoring System (SCMS) proposes and implement an intelligent system for detection of crops diseases and attack of pests on crops with the help of Image Processing techniques. The aim of the project is to provide an easy way to monitor the health of specific crop by sensing various environment parameters.

The system works on wireless sensor network and micro controllers to monitor the condition of the agriculture farm. Farmer can remotely view the ongoing condition of farm at anywhere in the world at any time. The proposed system consists of static cameras to take pictures of the crop for analysis and some sensors like capacitve soil moisture sensor, HDT11 humidity and temperature sensor, soil pH sensor and N P K (Nitrogen Phosphorus Potash) sensor for checking the quality of soil.

Smart Crops monitoring is an IOT based system that enables detection of weed, pest detection and crop growth process. Farmer also aware to the basic factors like Humidity in air, temperature of environment, soil moisture, soil pH level, soil nutrients( Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash)that are essential for proper growth of the crop. By using the system a farmer can remotely control and monitor the growth of a specific crop. The system provide help to enhance the growth of the crop by sensing disaster factors that affect the proper growth of that crop

 This project is intended to introduce the use of IOT in the field of Agriculture that enabling the farmers with the wide range of techniques such as precision and sustainable agriculture to face challenges in the field. IOT technology helps the farmer to get connected to his/her farm from anywhere and at any time

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is developing an intelligent system for farmers so that they can get the approximate idea about the crop health and proper growth. Early detection and management of problems associated with crop yield indicators, can help increases yield and economic growth. Wireless monitoring of field reduces the human power and it also allows user to see accurate changes in crop yield. It is cheaper in cost and consumes less power.Smart Crops Monitoring System is more efficient and beneficial for farmers to gives the information about the condition of crop, temperature of environment and humidity in air, soil moisture, soil pH level and soil nutrients etc. Internet of Things has enables the agriculture crop monitoring easy and efficient to enhance the productivity of the crop and hence profits for the farmer.

Project Implementation Method

Smart Crops Monitoring can be done by means of processing images of the specific crop for the purpose of detecting diseases, weeds around the crop and attack of pests, and checking other growth factors such as humidity in air, temperature of environment, soil nutrients, soil moisture and soil pH level for that crop with the help of different sensors.

So for processing images the process begin with the loading the external crop datasets. Once the dataset read then pre-processing will be done by various stages. After the data pre-processing, train the models using CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) into training set.

Processes of taking Values at the sensing environment from different hardware devices:

The data collected from the field environment for processing is of two categories.

Camera Images:

We use a camera module for taking picture. This module allows you to capture images in VGA format (640x480). It can perform some initial processing and transfer the images to microcontrollers, such as the Arduino, via the SCCB interface.

Sensor information

For checking the condition of environment and quality of soil we consider a various factor such as temperature, humidity by HDT11 sensor, soil PH by soil ph sensor, soil moisture by capacitive coil moisture sensor and soil nutrients by NPK sensor. Those are the input parameter for a system taken from the sensors. The sensors will collect the data, Atmega 328 take collected data as input and give output to LoRa transmitter, which transmit signal to the Gateway and gateway is connected with server by means of internet using WIFI module.

The microcontroller used in this board is Atmel’s Atmega328P which supports Arduino Programming. The ATmega328 chip has default Arduino bootloader and thus can be easily programmed using Arduino IDE. On the other hand, a Moduino LoRa Receiver which is Lora Radio (433M/868M/915M). It has Arduino pro mini 3.3V 8MHz bootloader on this board and uses the CP2104 as USB to serial to upload the code using Arduino IDE.

collected data is send to cloud (google colab) for processing and show results on laptop or mobile application.

Benefits of the Project

The diseases of crops, attack of pests on crops, weeds around the crop and lack of soil nutrients is one kind of natural disasters that affect the normal growth of plants and even cause plant death during the whole growth process of plants. The traditional approaches for detection of diseases, weeds around the crop requires continues monitoring and observation of farms either by farmers or by experts. But, it is very costly and time consuming. Other parameters like soil nutrients is also not measured without proper lab test which cause of wastage of water and fertilizers.

By using this system we can monitor the moisture content of soil, soil nutrients, soil pH level, humidity and temperature to meet the water and basic nutrients requirements necessary for the crop to enhance the proper growth of the crop for maximum production at minimum cost. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Smart Crops Monitoring Sysytem (SCMS) is an IOT based system that works on wireless sensor networks and micro controllers to monitor the ongoing condition of the agriculture farm. the system consists of static cameras to take pictures of the crop for processing and some sensors like capacitve soil moisture sensor, HDT11 humidity and temperature sensor, soil pH sensor and N P K (Nitrogen Phosphorus Potash) sensor for checking the quality of soil. the collected data send to cloud for processing and after processing results are shown in laptop or mobile application.

Using application farmer is get connected to the farm and aware to the ongoing condition of the farm at anywhere in the world at any time when he want.
