Railway level crossing is considered to be one of the most dangerous points in rail networks. In recent research, it is indicated that the risk of accidents due to railway level crossing is increasing. The need for an automatic system arose due to poor management and responsibility of the railway system. Communications are really challenging due to the adverse transmission conditions and the lack of a pre-provided infrastructure for supporting long range connectivity with land. Communications in high seas are usually covered by satellite links that are expensive and lead to high power consumption by the terminals. However, in areas closer to the shore, other communication options have been adopted for different kinds of services such as boat tracking and telemetry, data collection from moored monitoring systems, etc. The advantages of the latest generation of broadband communication systems (e.g., LTE, 5G) and the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for the railway environment are also explained together with the strategic roadmap to ensure a smooth migration from GPS Furthermore, this survey focuses on providing a holistic approach, identifying scenarios and architectures where railways could leverage better commercial IoT capabilities. After reviewing the main industrial developments, short and medium-term IoT-enabled services for smart railways are evaluated. Those unmanned crossings can pose a threat to safety and hence a solution is needed to control the gates using reliable and economical means. This paper addresses the solution by using LoRa based IOT framework to control unmanned level crossing gates.
All this operation makes the railway level crossing automatic without human invention.
