Project Summary

Currently, Bluetooth based wireless control is an increasing trend for automation systems. As nowadays Android devices are very commonly found in every homes. This work highlights the importance of Bluetooth that can wirelessly control Smart Blinds in homes. In our project “Smart Blinds by Arduino,” the blinds are adjusted by giving instructions through android application. From this application, blinds will open, close, tilt up and tilt down. we can stop and disconnect the Bluetooth directly through android application. Android application is an interface or acts as remote to send the instructions to the smart blinds. All the embedded instructions are sent from android application through Bluetooth to Arduino and Arduino execute these instructions remotely to perform actions.  For storing the previous setting of the blinds by the user it is best to create a memory system within the smart blinds that remember the previous setting or also remember the new setting if changed by the user. This project is meant to be user-friendly.  

Project Objectives

Our everyday life is fully covered by modern technologies and life without these technologies is difficult for us. Day by day it creates our life easier. Home automation gives the idea of controlling the home appliances electrically and under control. As people move to many places, they spend their homes with leaving all appliances, some of them need to plug in all the time without any guidance but with this control automation system this can be easy for them to monitor them all the time. This is best to control the system remotely with smart phones. We need to switch ON and OFF to control these appliances but we can make these easy by sending command by software installed on Smartphone. We also control electronic devices of home such as lights, AC, electric fans, refrigerator, doors, TV, and water tank and much more through Bluetooth shortage range by using mobile phone. In this project, we describe that how we can control and design a smart home appliance control system which is based on microcontroller. There is no need to maintain them weekly for good performance and it reduce the wiring problem and cost of wiring.

We design a system which can open and close shades or rotate blinds without any effort. We can also use these smart blinds in any offices, industries, shops or university classrooms etc. Inside this method we use Arduino board (an open source electronic prototyping platform) to receive and transmit signal from the Bluetooth device. The range of the Bluetooth module is also be set that no other can get control on it. It can read any kind of sensors like light on sensor, finger on a catch, safety sensors, temperature sensors etc.

The following objective that fulfill that aims:

  • Designing smart home control application system using Bluetooth device.
  • Develop enjoyable and user-friendly prototype to enhance living style.
  • Simulation of the design.
  • Testing the design system with wider quality of electrical or electronic equipment and resolve the errors.
  • Designing a circuit that works efficiently and automatically to operate different appliances of home connected with this system and control it.

Project Implementation Method

We are making this project by using Arduino (microcontroller) which is a programmable chip and uses in this project for control purpose. The actions are remotely performed by the android application which is mobile friendly. The interface between the android and Arduino is the Bluetooth module. This is use for sending the commands between android and the Arduino microcontroller. The motors thus perform the actions by sending the commands from Arduino to the motor driver. The motor driver is use for controlling the motors. The motors are connected with the blinds and with the help of these motors the blinds perform the action of tilt up, tilt down, lift up, lift down and stop.

The main objective of this project is to make the blinds smartly by remote instructions given to them and for disable people to easily operate these blinds. The blinds can prevent the hard rays and sunlight to come inside the room by quickly sending the commands by touching the button from android application.

The android application is mostly use in this era and by everyone because of facilities it provides and functionality it performs. It makes all the things in one touch which is its best functionality that it makes everything to send command in just one touch. The GUI of the android applications attract everyone concentration toward it. The software that I use to control the blinds is” Android Studio”.

The android application is use to send the command to the Bluetooth by clicking on the button in according to perform the certain actions. So the android application is the first priority in this project for sending the command and performing the certain actions by the blinds.

Benefits of the Project

The blinds are used in any place or in everyone home. The blinds or drapers/curtains are used to prevent from the outer heat as well as for privacy. The blinds are also a part of making the outstanding look to house. But these blinds are need to be operated manually which time are consuming as well as an extra activity to do, but this is difficult for disable people to do.

For this reason, we are making a project in which the blinds are making smart and to control them using remote access, so android application is front end while the Arduino board is back end. The commands are sends by the android application through Bluetooth module to the Arduino board which is a programmable board and thus action performed by this. The microcontroller in the Arduino board controls the blinds to open and close. The additional feature that we add in the project is that we also use time and temperature sensor with this blinds. When the temperature to the certain fix limit increases the blinds automatically open and when the temperature decreases from a certain limit blinds automatically close. We also set the time that at a certain time the blinds automatically open and on which time it automatically close. These additional features are more enhancing and fascinating that it can automatically with time and temperature can open and close the blinds. If we leave the room without closing the blinds these can automatically close due to this time setting. If the sunlight rays are more that are damaging our skin so these blinds are automatically close.

Automation play very important role in our life. The technology can make our life simpler and easier. As the technology increase the automation become more effective and efficient for use. So there is needed to do the things efficient as the technology and making the smart blinds are a small step for improvement in the automation system. Smart blinds are delightful and comfortable and affordable for everyone especially for handicap or also for elder to open and close or to adjust them by sitting no need to go and set them. This makes our work comfortable, easy, and enjoyable but also save time by just one click. This can eliminate the extra burden to open/close the blinds by just one touch. These can give better and charming look to our houses. These are also helpful for the privacy. Control blinds are the best replacement of normal blinds. We can easily make adjustments in it by giving commands. This is the self-operated automation system that we make its setting according to our needs and environmental conditions. These blinds are not very costly and easy to maintain and set with the environmental conditions of every area.

We are using above hardware components and making a circuit that is using to make smart blinds. This design is use to blinds tilt up, rotate up,, rotate down, tilt down. We are adding one more feature that is using for setting a time that is use by the arduino for blinds to open and close.

       We are making android application that is use for sending signal to arduino . Android application uses meduim as bluetooth.
