Project Summary

Summary:

Shell Eco Marathon is an event that challenges university students to give maximum mileage in one litre of fuel. Following the officials rules of shell eco marathon an urban concept car will be designed, fabricated and tested. Main theme of this project is to overcome energy crisis by reducing the drag produced on the monocoque, reducing the car weight and enhancing the streamline shape for efficient mileage. Also designing a communication system for the car to display real time data of the driver's and car condition to the pit crew. A few designs will be proposed and analyzed individually, the most efficent in terms of egronomics will be selected for our purpose. Which will be fabricated and tested comprehensively. 

Project Objectives

Objectives:

The objectives are divided into two parts

  1. Electrical:
    • Two way communication system
    • Sensors for driver's and car's data
    • Saftey equipments
    • Headlights, backlights and indicators
    • A custom steering wheel eqipped with electrical devices for driver.
  2. Mechanical:
    • Improvong engine and transmission
    • Monocoqoue/skin design
    • Designing of steering wheel
    • Repairing and improving the old chassis

Project Implementation Method

  • Things done :
    • Old body was removed.
    • Aluminum Chassis was repaired.
    • New improved chassis was built according to new rules and regulations
    • Meanwhile Engine went under full service.
    • EFI and Euro-2 Test runs.
    • Body designing was done on software in about three months.
    • Decided to go with carbon fibre.
    • Communication system was built
    • Arduino and Rasberry Pi were used
  • Things to be done :
    • Body completion
    • Implementation on chassis
    • Implementation of communication system in the car
    • Implementation of electronics
    • Implementation of Safety features

  • Improve's a car's efficiency.
  • A car  that's a relief in current fuel crisis.
  • Reduce pollution 
  • An efficent communication system for monitering the car.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  1. Carburetor to Euro 2
    • Carburetors  have been used for decades .The problem is they cause alot of emissions. A fuel injection system was introduced in the early 1990's and by 1996 EFI system was implemented in cars.Nowadays special kit are available to convert carburetor engines to EFI. Euro 2 is another technology where wasted/dirty petrol gets filtered and reused. EFI kits dont exist for a single cylinder and the best cheap way to achieve efficiency was to convert it to EURO 2.
  2. Steering  Wheel
    • ???????Its the most important part of the car. Our car would be needing a custom steering wheel tailored to our needs. Electrical equipments will be fitted on the steering wheel to operate equipments in the car.
  3. Two way communication system:
    • The communicaton system will be providing update on the car and the driver. Real time values will be shared to the pit crew so they know the driver's and car's situation. We can transmit live feed data yo to anyone in the world.
  4. Body design
    • We faced many challenges when it came to the body selection and design.The chasiss we got needed a complete overhaul and requied alot repairs. The body was redesigned according to THE NEW RULES. 
  5. Monocoqoue:
    • ???????Carbon fibre wass elected to build the sin of our ca as ts the lightest. The design was made using Solidworks. Its currently i  progress.
