Seed Quality Control Unit
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryPakistan is an agricultural country. Almost 70% population of the country is directly or indirectly connected to agriculture. In the Agriculture sector, the most difficulty that farmers are facing is the quality of seeds. They cannot detect the live and dead seed. When farmers are cultivating the field it takes two to three months to observe the quality of seed so it is difficult for the farmers to re-cultivate the field. It will double the cost and double the time. So we have to design a sophisticated handheld experimental unit to predict the germination of seed before cultivating the field.
“Seed Quality Control Unit” is the solution to this problem. Using this control unit farmers can analyze the quality of seed whether it is germanium or not before cultivating the field. It will save farmers extra time and cost.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective is to design a sophisticated handheld experimental unit to predict the germination of seed based on its dielectric properties measured in the microwave frequency region.
The interim term objectives of the project are
- Mathematical modeling, simulation and fabrication of a standalone microwave sensor to predict the quality of seed
- Scale-up of the project to process bulk seeds
- Literature Review
- Learning of simulation software
- Mathematical Modeling
- Simulation of microwave sensor on high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS)
- Fabrication of sensor
- Experiments with live and dead seeds in stand-alone sensor
- Modification in the sensor for precision sensing
- Development of continuous mode monitoring System
- Scale-up of sensing platform for bulk measurements
- Final Experimentation
The proposed project will be beneficial to the agriculture sector. Some of the project benefits are
- Farmers can get trust in the quality of seeds before cultivating the field
- Farmers can save time and cost of re-cultivating the field when they come to know about the quality of seed
- Farmers can get more profit
- The agriculture sector can share more in boosting the economy of the country
The final Deliverable will be a control unit where the sensor will detect whether the seed is germanium or dead based on the resonant frequency. There will be set up as a conveyer belt where a continuous flow of seed will be going on. At the output, there will be two ports one for germanium seeds and another for dead seeds decided by the sensor using the resonant frequency.
