Project Summary

Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) is an industrial control system which is used in many modern industries like energy, manufacturing, power, water transportation, etc. SCADA systems organize multiple technologies that allow processing, gather and monitor data at the same time to send instructions to those points that transmit data.

This project we find challenging because developing an overvoltage or under voltage system for the dc voltages is quite easy, but as we will be working on the AC mains lines and we will change the AC voltage in real time and will see the effect this is difficult and requires study. Because our aim is to monitor the frequency and voltage of the same AC lines at the same time which is quite challenging.

To monitor in real time the following parameters

1. Over Voltage

2. Under Voltage

3. Cable disconnection

4. Frequency

5. Overload

Project Objectives

In order to get maximum benefits from the electric the power, we decided to devise our own SCADA "supervisory control and data acquisition" Application. With the help of this application. we will be able to monitor in real time the following parameters

1. Over Voltage

2. Under Voltage

3. Cable disconnection

4. Frequency

5. Overload

Project Implementation Method

As the power system deals with power generation, transmission and distribution sectors, monitoring is the main aspect in all these areas. Thus the SCADA implementation of power system improves the overall efficiency of the system for optimizing, supervising and controlling the generation and transmission systems. SCADA function in the power system network provides greater system reliability and stability for integrated grid operation.

With the use of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) hardware and powerful bus communication links along with SCADA software and hardware are in power generating stations, delivering an optimal solution for each and every process operation is flexible with advanced control structures. The below figure shows the SCADA structure in power generation where it supervises several operations, including protection, controlling and monitoring. The functions of SCADA in power generation include

  • Continuous monitoring of Speed and Frequency
  • Geographical monitoring of coal delivery and water treatment processes
  • Supervising the status of circuit breakers, protective relays, and other safety-related operations
  • Generation operations planning
  • Active and reactive power control
  • Turbine protection
  • Load scheduling
  • Historical data processing of all generation related parameters

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)

SCADA is an industrial software it is user-friendly front-end to a control system, that easily communicates with PLCs. SCADA software is very useful to monitor and analysis of historical as well as new data. It allows remote monitoring and controlling of various plant operations in real time basis.

SCADA systems are generally used in automation industries along with PLCs.

Major functions of a SCADA system are:

  1. Supervision or monitoring
  2. Controlling.
  3. Data acquisition
  4. Communication with PLC.
  5. Data presentation.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Basically, the current demands and needs to protect the electrical system from damaging in case if there is any increase or decrease in the main ac voltage lines.  The faults which we come up while transmitting electricity from power station (i.e. maybe thermal, hydel, etc.) to local substations or grid stations and vice versa. Because without power we are nothing i.e. we can’t perform our work i.e. if we work in an office, and there is no power how will we do our work, etc.
