Run of river Energy Conversion
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryMicro-hydro is one of the most cost-effective power technologies to be taken into consideration for rural electrification in less evolved international locations.
Micro-hydro in most cases is ‘run of river’. Run of river hydroelectricity is a type of hydroelectric generation wherein little or no water storage is supplied. Run of the river power plant may additionally both have no storage in any respect or a confined amount of water supply. The civil works purely serve the characteristic of regulating the degree of water on the consumption of the hydro plant.
Consequently, the run of river installation no longer has any negative impact on the neighborhood surroundings as massive hydropower plant. Hydro energy plant is classified in keeping with their capacities which include
- Big hydropower plant (>100 MW)
- Medium hydro energy plant (15- 100MW)
- Small hydroelectricity plant (1-15 MW)
- Mini hydroelectricity plant (> 100 MW however <1MW)
- Micro-hydro strength plant (5KW to 100 KW)
- % hydro energy plant (from a few hundred watts to 5KW)
Micro-hydro started with the timber waterwheel. Waterwheels of diverse types have been utilized in Europe and Asia for a few 2000 years, normally for milling grain. By the point of the commercial Revolution, waterwheel technology had been advanced to an excellent artwork, and combined with the need to increase smaller and higher velocity gadgets to generate energy, led to the improvement of cutting-edge-day generators. Micro-hydro is one of the surroundings of friendly resources of electricity. This era is extremely robust and requires little renovation.
This project will not only provide us the green energy but it can also produce enough energy to overcome the energy shortage problem in our country.
By using these small scale generators we can power up small industries, housing schemes, small areas, villages, streets lights, and factories.
Project ObjectivesOur target is to overcome the power shortage and load shedding from our country.
This project includes the following objectives
- To provide the energy to the areas where there is no electricity.
- To utilize the maximum run of river energy.
- We will use canals, streams and small dams to produce electricity.
- We are going to light up the street lights, small industries etc which are near the flowing water.
- It will be the self generation technology.
We will implement this project in four phases.
- Initial phase.
- We are going to collect the related data and information on the project implementation sites.
2. Secondary phase.
- This phase will include the generator and turbine technical details plus its pros and cons.
- Which turbine and generator to use.
3. Third Phase.
- Cost estimation and thesis, report.
- Project model preparation and implementation.
4. Fourth Phase.
- Project presentation and project report submission.
- National level recognition and implementation.
Micro-hydro is generally defined as electricity
generation capacity up to 100 kW.
• These plants do not need impoundment.
• Hydropower is a renewable, non-polluting and
environmentally benign source of energy.
• Like all hydro-electric power, run-of-the-river
hydro harnesses the natural potential energy of
water, eliminating the need to burn coal or natural
gas to generate the electricity needed by consumers
and industry.
• These plants are set up nearer to the load centers.
According to the requirement of the load.
• Electricity can be generated constantly.
• Power is usually available continuously on
demand.
• No fuel is required and only limited maintenance
is required.
• It is a long-lasting technology.
• It has almost no environmental impact.
Micro hydropower plant has some more advantages
over other types of plants such as wind, solar
power plants these are [4]:
• The capacity factor of a micro-hydropower plant is high
as compared with solar and wind.
• The predictability of the micro-hydropower plant is
very high and is vary with annual rainfall patterns.
• Output power varies only from day to day not
from minute to minute.
• A good correlation with demand.
• It has a high efficiency which varies from 70% to
90% by far the best of all energy technologies.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable- Complex engineering problem solving related to power deficiency due to imperfect turbine design and efficiency.
- The preparation of small but more reliable energy-efficient electro power generator to produce more energy.
- Low-level water and less pressure to run a generator, which can easily produce excess amount of energy to run the loads mentioned above.
- No big dams or reservoirs are required for this technology and we can use these small generators in small streams and natural water flow by using the spiral turbine.
