Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryModern households are becoming more automated thereby delivering convenience and reducing time spent on household chores. While vacuum cleaners have made home cleaning easier, they are largely noisy and bulky for everyday use. Here, we report the development of a compact and efficient vacuum cleaner robot for potential office and home use. The developed robot would be disk-shaped, equipped with vacuuming and cleaning technology and controlled by Arduino mega microcontroller. It will suck dirt via a retractable dustbin on top of which a cooling fan will be mounted, and two sweepers each driven by a DC motor. The robot will navigate via two motor shield controlled rear wheels and a front caster wheel which will also govern its turning. Four ultrasonic sensors will detect obstacles and subsequently help the robot navigate. The robot will be powered by 3 batteries, rechargeable via an embedded AC-DC adapter. The battery would work continuously for two hours and cleans floor efficiently. With this capability, the device will be deployed for office and home use thereby making cleaning a fully autonomous duty.
Project ObjectivesA very notable household chore is floor cleaning which is often considered as unpleasant, difficult, awkward and boring. In most cases, cleaners are hired to do the task rather than the household residents do it. The discomfort posed by this recurrent chore necessitates development of a vacuum cleaner that could assist human with such a task. A vacuum cleaner is an electromechanical appliance commonly used for cleaning floors, furniture, rugs and carpets by suction.
Our objective is to develop such a robot based vacuum cleaner system that assists humans in household work and reduces their effort. In this project we need to implement wheel, cleaning, electrical and control systems and then integrate them together. Two axial wheels, which are DC-motor driven, permit motion in only parallel directions and generate the torque needed to move the cleaner. The single front wheel, which is servo-controlled steers the robot by actively and promptly switching direction of the wheel. It will be designed to facilitate reverse and forward movement of the robot. A rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery will be used because of its light weigh, high electrochemical potential and good energy density.
In this work, we will use Arduino microcontroller because it uses single board computer, making it popular in professional market. Arduino mega will used for this work because it allows us to use more pins and more memory to retain codes. The Arduino Mega is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega2560.
Project Implementation MethodA very easy and safe is to use popular L293D chip. It is a 16- pin chip. The pin configuration of a L293D along with the behaviors of motor for different input A number of software and hardware implementation techniques will be used to design and develop the system. We will use a 12VDC motor, L293D IC, Different Sensors, Vacuum mechanism and Arduino to develop our system. The operation of the robotic vacuum is going to be based on retrieving data from an array of inputs that will tell the condition of the floor space around the vacuum. These inputs include sonar, touch sensors etc. . The data from these inputs will be fed into the chip(s) which through its software program will decide which direction the vacuum should move by sending the control signals out to the drive motors.
Benefits of the ProjectThis project can be used in houses, offices, educational institutes in cleaning grounds or shops or vast areas such industries. It is a commercial commodity that can be used in different sectors for cleaning purposes. The vacuum cleaner attached to the robotic body will be able to move around freely autonomously in the entire area that needs to be cleaned. If an obstacle comes into its path, it will redirect and move accordingly. It can be programmed to clean at a specific time of a day. Hence it will help people even when they arenot at home.Since ot has rechageable batteries with a seprate charger, there will be no hassle of cord to deal with making it portable and easy to use. It will be able to fit into tight spaces hences more usable.
